Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald journalists earn top awards from Florida news editors

Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald journalists received top honors in the Florida Society of News Editors’ annual journalism awards.

Six staff writers and visual journalists were recognized Thursday as first-place winners: Nora Gamez Torres for coverage of Cuba; Jorge Ebro for sports reporting in Spanish; Sonia Osorio for news reporting in Spanish; Isadora Rangel for Miami Dysfunction, a series of editorials that examined flaws in the city of Miami’s structure of governance; Al Diaz for spot news photography on a three-alarm fire at a Miami Gardens apartment building; and Pedro Portal for feature photography for How this Miami-area pediatrician is keeping kids healthy.

Alex Mena named new FSNE leader

Also on Thursday, Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald Executive Editor Alex Mena was named the new president of FSNE, whose mission is to “advance the cause of responsible journalism.”
