Missing man, 95, found dead on cliffs below park in L.A.’s Harbor region

The body of a man found on the cliffs below Point Fermin Park in San Pedro last week has been identified as a 95-year-old man reported missing the same day, authorities announced.

Family and friends, as well as the Los Angeles Police Department, asked for the public’s help on July 11 in locating Walter Curtis Wolfe, who had last been seen on July 8 around the 800 block of North Malgren Avenue.

Earlier in the day, the 95-year-old’s vehicle was spotted five miles away at Point Fermin in the 800 block of West Paseo Del Mar, where he was known to enjoy walks.

Just before 5 p.m. on July 11, crews with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to Point Fermin Park on reports of a “deceased person near the bottom of the cliffs,” an LAFD news release stated.

Firefighters assisted police and investigators with the L.A. County Medical Examiner in the recovery operation by deploying a helicopter to hoist the victim’s body off the cliffs.

Crews then safely landed near the Korean Bell and transferred his body over for an investigation.

So far, authorities have not released any information on how the 95-year-old might have ended up on the cliffs, nor have they said if his death is being investigated as a homicide.

No further details about the tragic incident have been released.
