Missing person found dead in Currituck field Saturday

MOYOCK — A missing person’s body was found in a field Saturday, according to the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing, and it remains unclear what the cause of death was.

“There appears to be zero signs of foul play,” Capt. Kevin McCord said Sunday morning.

Deputies responded to a 7:40 a.m. call Saturday to Sunny Lake Road for a report of a missing person, according to a Facebook post from the Sheriff’s Office.

The post stated the missing person hadn’t returned home and “had a medical issue that required prescribed medication twice a day,” adding that “he may be in serious need” of medical help.

“A ping of the missing person’s cell phone was done, and it showed him in the area in or around his house,” the post continued. “After a couple hours of searching for the vehicle, deputies located a suspicious object in the field several hundred yards behind the residence. The missing individual was located deceased in a large field just north of the Eagle Creek subdivision.”

The medical examiner and detectives “arrived and processed the scene.” While the investigation is ongoing, the sheriff’s office said there “appears to be no criminal intent at this time.”

When asked what suspicious object was found, the name and age of the deceased and other questions, McCord said he could not answer at this time.

As of late Saturday, the family of the deceased was attempting to contact additional family members, so the public post was all the information that could be released until Monday morning, he explained.
