Power restored after SMUD outage in North Natomas affects nearly 10,000 customers

Electricity was restored for nearly 10,000 customers of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District after an outage knocked out power in the North Natomas section of Sacramento for an hour on Sunday.

The outage began at 10:31 a.m., SMUD reported on its outage page, and cut electricity electricity to 9,559 homes and businesses. According to its outage page, power was restored about an hour later.

SMUD officials said the cause of the outage was not known and its troubleshooters found no damage to its equipment.

The extent of the outage was not known and SMUD has removed the feature on its website showing the number of customers who have called about the outage. However, radio dispatches reviewed by The Sacramento Bee indicated escalators and other equipment at Sacramento International Airport went offline around the same time of the outage. The Sacramento Fire Department was also called to at least one elevator rescue at a hotel on Venture Oaks Way.

Residents of Sacramento are reliant on electricity to power air conditioning and other cooling devices as temperatures in the capital city are expected to soar to 108 degrees. Most of the capital region is under an excessive heat warning through Tuesday as a heat wave bakes Northern California.
