NTMC hosts Junior Volunteers

Jul. 30—North Texas Medical Center's Junior Volunteer Program recently hosted 28 high school and college students to help them gain experience in several healthcare-related fields.

The 28 students participating marks a new record for the Junior Volunteer Program at NTMC, doubling the count from last year. The program is for students ages 16-19 from Cooke and Montague counties.

"It was great to see so many students apply for the program this year," said NTMC Director of Marketing Darin Allred. "It's encouraging to see a large number of young people considering a career in healthcare. Anything we can do to help them learn more about the healthcare field, we want to offer them that opportunity. We even have former junior volunteers who are now employees of NTMC, which is extra special."

The program allows the volunteers to experience working in a variety of hospital departments. They are able to interact with doctors, nurses, hospital staff, patients and families. The students volunteered in Physical Therapy, Labor and Delivery, Medical Imaging, Laboratory, Emergency Department, Surgical Services, ICU, Respiratory Therapy, NTMC Health Primary Care, Pediatrics Care and Women's Care.

"We have students who want to be nurses, doctors, physical therapists, radiologists and nurse practitioners," Allred said. "Even before they get to college, they have a plan for their career and this program is giving them an insight of what to expect. For many, a program like this is important when it comes to applying to medical school or nursing school."

Students participating in the program this summer include Wyatt Anderle (Era HS), McKenzie Armor (Callisburg HS), Emma Baker (Lindsay HS), Beau Brooks (Era HS), Annaliese Cisneros (Sanger HS/NCTC), Lily Clayton (Era HS), Nikolas Clure (Forestburg HS), Cyleigh Duffy (Valley View HS), Kyler Dunn (Saint Jo HS), Noah Green (Gainesville HS), Elizabeth Hawkins (Lindsay HS), Jake Hess (Sacred Heart HS), Amira Khan (Gainesville HS), Rebecca Klement (Muenster HS), Cayla Lockridge (Lindsay HS), Hilary McDougall (Callisburg HS), Emily Montoya (Gainesville HS), Kaityn Nunez (Era HS), Hope Pearman (Era HS), Anika Samita (Allen HS), Andie Schroeder (Muenster HS), Kevin Tran (Gainesville HS), Katherine Vann (Valley View HS/Texas Tech), Edwin Varghese (Prosper HS), Meadow Walterscheid (Muenster HS/Alabama), Marlee Walterscheid (Muenster HS), Koti Wood (Valley View HS), Lexi Woolsey (Callisburg HS).

"This year's program is so large, we actually are having to do three sessions," Allred said. "So over a four-week period, we have students here in both the morning and afternoon. Again, it just shows how much this program has grown and the interest from area high school and college students to learn as much as they can about possible careers."
