Over 100 illegal aerial fireworks uncovered during warrant search by Woodland police

In a crackdown ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, police detectives in collaboration with Cal Fire executed search warrants at two homes in Woodland, uncovering over 100 illegal fireworks.

The operation conducted Thursday resulted in the discovery of 120 illegal “aerial firework mortars” at one of the homes, according to a news release by the Woodland Police Department. Photos from the department showed several boxes marketed as “Neon Skies” multipacks with “60G max load.”

The artillery-style fireworks kit is sold for about $145 a piece online, and are sold in other states, according to retailers. A warning on the box indicates that each pyrotechnic “shoots flaming balls with reports,” more commonly known as explosions after the initial blast.

“The complete investigation is still in progress and an arrest is probable based on the total weight of the fireworks,” officers said in the statement. “In addition to the arrest, the violator will be subject to a $120,000 fine based on the new $1,000 per device amendment to the city ordinance.”

Officers underscored the heightened danger of fireworks during the heat wave, which is expected to last through Sunday.

“Please share this information as much as possible. With the extreme heat and wind in the forecast for the coming week, it is even more important to keep this 4th of July Safe and Sane,” they said, a reference to legal fireworks carrying the state fire marshal’s seal.

Officials said residents can report any illegal or misused fireworks activity to the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 530-666-2411. In cases of a life-threatening emergency, residents are urged to call 911.
