Pedestrian killed by SUV on I-95 exit ramp in Fort Lauderdale

A pedestrian was struck and killed early Thursday morning as a driver tried to avert a crash with another vehicle as he was exiting 1-95 in Broward County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred just after 5 a.m. as the driver of a white Cadillac SUV attempted to exit I-95 onto east Interstate 595 in Fort Lauderdale, according to FHP. The driver identified as a 55-year-old male from Pompano Beach, veered into the right lane to avoid hitting a car in front of him and struck the pedestrian.

FHP did not name the driver or the victim as it was trying to notify the victim’s family.

After the collision, NBC6 Miami reported the driver pulled to the shoulder and called 911. First responders arrived and took the victim, a 43-year-old man from Lauderdale Lakes, to Broward General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

“At this time there are no formal charges however, the investigation is still early and very active,” said Trooper Raeford Griffin.
