Before the rain, South Florida cities are giving out sandbags. How and where to get them

South Florida may get heavy rain and flooding over the weekend as a tropical wave near Haiti moves closer to the state. The National Hurricane Center has been monitoring the cluster of storms and has increased the likelihood of development into a tropical depression.

So, some cities in South Florida are acting now to help people prepare.

Here’s what to know about sandbag distribution:

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is offering free sandbags to residents as part of its preparation efforts during hurricane season. Sandbag distribution will occur every Saturday throughout the season, which runs through Nov. 30, with city workers available to assist.

When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday

Locations: Floyd Hull Stadium 2800 SW Eighth Ave. and Mills Pond Park 2201 NW Ninth Ave.

Requirements: Proof of residency is required and there is a limit of five bags per vehicle.

Note: If you can’t visit during staffed hours, sand will be available for self-service at both locations daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Residents must bring their own sandbags and shovels for self-service.

Miami Beach

Miami Beach is offering pre-filled sandbags to residents this weekend.

When: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 4

Locations: 2100 Collins Ave., east of Collins Park, and 225 79th St., in North Beach.

Requirements: Proof of residency, such as a government-issued ID or utility bill, is required and there is a limit of four sandbags per household.

Note: Residents are reminded that only dry sandbags can be stored for reuse. Sandbags that have been exposed to floodwaters may contain contaminants and should be disposed of properly. The city advises against emptying sandbags onto beaches or into drains to protect the coastal dunes, which serve as a critical defense against storm surge.

Miami Lakes

The Town of Miami Lakes is distributing free sandbags.

When: Noon to 6 p.m Friday Aug. 2

Location: Royal Oaks Park 16500 NW 87th Ave.

Requirements: Proof of residency is required and sandbags will be pre-filled; there is a limit of 10 per vehicle.
