‘Paint party’ raises money for children’s center mural” (fresnobee.com, June 23, 2016)

I am disheartened and disappointed that California State University, Fresno ignores the future of the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature. There are currently very few — if any — staff members working at the center to maintain the collection. This ignores the stipulations and requirements when the center was originally set up by Nixon.

It has been several years that our concerns have been ignored, including an in-person meeting. From the beginning, the center has hosted internationally known children’s literature groups, outstanding conferences and author talks. It had become a place where several authors and illustrators had chosen to house their papers and collections (a valuable research tool). The Center’s Advocate group established the Leo Politi Garden, a special remembrance of a Fresno-born author and illustrator.

The center had provided accessibility and education. If it is not appreciated and maintained in the manner it was set up to be, then the collection and endowment should be moved to another academic setting. That would be a shame and great loss for Fresno.

David Valadao, Rudy Salas rematch in CA22 House election,” (fresnobee.com, March 13)

Rep. Rudy Salas’ votes hurt us, and I am so frustrated that our representative is still hurting us.

Salas was twiddling his thumbs in the Sacramento Assembly while gas prices skyrocketed. He voted for costly energy regulations that could spike gas prices by 73 cents per gallon. That’s highway robbery — literally — all while hard-working families like mine struggle to fill up their tanks just to get to work and school.

Salas claims he’s fighting for the Valley, but his votes show otherwise. He’s just another tax-and-spend Sacramento politician who’s out of touch with the people.

We’re sick and tired of it. No more excuses, no more lies. Salas needs to be held accountable for making our cost of living skyrocket.

Black advocates say CA reparations funding is not enough,” (sacbee.com, June 25)

Of course it isn’t enough. What could possibly provide adequate compensation for abduction and centuries of vicious slavery, followed by more generations of systematic and legally enforced exclusion with intermittent violence and biases that persist today?

Before we came close to full restorative justice, we’d have perpetrated massive additional injustices in the course of the effort. We have to find a different approach.

Energy users protest CPUC electric fee approval,” (sacbee.com, May 9)

The sun belongs to everyone, except for California’s renters, schools and farms, according to the California Public Utility Commission. Due to investor-owned utility pressure, the CPUC voted last year to stop anyone with multiple meters from using their own rooftop solar energy. Instead, utilities seize control of solar-generated power and sell that power back to them (i.e. renters) at full price.

The good news is that the state senate recently approved Senate Bill 1374, which will enable renters, schools and farmers to benefit directly from rooftop solar. The bad news is that SB 1374 needs to pass the assembly, starting with the Utilities and Energy Committee. Meanwhile, the utilities are urging lawmakers to kill the bill.

Tell your representative to vote yes on SB 1374.

Gavin Newsom heading to Atlanta to boost Joe Biden in presidential debate with Donald Trump,” (sacbee.com, June 26)

Just wondering: While we dodge and bounce through potholes, who paid for Gov. “Gruesomes” first-class flight to and from the presidential debate?
