Sacramento police release draft report on its military equipment. Here’s how you can weigh in

The Sacramento Police Department has released a draft of its annual military equipment use report for 2023-24 and is hosting a community meeting with the city’s police review commission to discuss the report and its policies this month.

The annual report is required under Assembly Bill 481, which was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2021 and outlines the requirements a law enforcement must meet before acquiring and using military-style equipment or surplus from various federal agencies.

The report — which details the rifles, vehicles, drones and other “military equipment” in its inventory — is expected to be presented and voted on by the City Council, though no date has been set. Last year, the council approved the report, which cataloged the agency’s $4.5 million of existing equipment, as well as requests for $360,000 in new equipment.

The law also requires community feedback, and the department is urging residents to attend the event from 6 to 9 p.m. July 22 at Oak Park Community Center, 3425 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Police are also encouraging residents to offer their input on the 107-page report through an online survey, which the department posted Wednesday. The survey is available in five languages.

More information about the community session and survey are available on the city’s website.
