San Bernardino Co. Sheriff’s Dept. says reported kidnapping was ‘unfounded’

Authorities in San Bernardino County investigating a reported kidnapping determined the report to be “unfounded.”

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated that they were dispatched to the area of Sourwood Way and Cloudberry Drive in a neighborhood known as Rosena Ranch, which lies north of the city of Rialto, at 8:42 p.m. Friday.

Responding deputies from the Fontana station were informed that a female was heard screaming and was seen being forced into a white van, SBSD said.

“Initial information appeared to corroborate the observations of the reporting party,” the department said in a release.  “The involved vehicle was described as a white van and a partial license plate number was provided.”

Deputies worked alongside the Fontana Police Department – who deployed their helicopter during the search – to locate the potential victim.

Eventually, investigators were able to locate a resident who informed them that a teenage girl was picked up by a family member in a similar vehicle; the parties involved – including the white van – were soon found and determined that the juvenile had not been kidnapped.

“The circumstances, while initially suspicious in nature, were not criminal, and she was unharmed,” officials said.

The department thanked the members of the public for contributing video surveillance and other key information that was “crucial to a successful outcome.”
