A Simi Valley man and his Chihuahua are recovering after a coyote entered their home through the dog door and attacked until the man killed the wild creature with a kitchen knife.

Just before noon Monday, a homeowner in the 500 block of Shadow Lane exited the shower only to hear a commotion downstairs, Sgt. Morton of the Simi Valley Police Department told KTLA.

That neighborhood backs up to wildland, added Officer Casey Nicholson.

Once downstairs, the man realized a coyote was in his kitchen attacking the Chihuahua.

After his attempts to scare the coyote failed, the man armed himself with a kitchen knife and stabbed the coyote several times, then followed it as it retreated to a bathroom, where he killed the predator.

The dog was wounded in the face and head, and she is expected to be released from the veterinarian today.

The homeowner was wounded in his right hand and arm, but Morton says he is currently doing well.

Nicholson added that the man, described as being middle-aged, sustained multiple bite marks.

“Today, he’s continuing … to receive treatment for significant injuries,” Nicholson said.
