South Los Angeles deputy was killed by meth, coroner finds

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy who died in South Los Angeles in April succumbed to the “effects of methamphetamine,” according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.

What the Sheriff’s Department called Deputy Jonathan Stewart’s “unexpected passing” on April 27 was determined to be caused by methamphetamine, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

Stewart, 41, was found unresponsive at the South Los Angeles Station and pronounced dead at the scene.

Further details were largely unavailable, including “whether officials found any drug paraphernalia or illicit substances at the scene of Stewart’s death,” the Times added.

The Medical Examiner did, however, confirm that the death was deemed accidental in nature.
