10-hour standoff ends with ‘peaceful resolution’ after man detained, Sacramento police say

A man accused of wielding a gun was detained Monday after a nearly 10-hour standoff in which residents evacuated homes as the man jumped through backyards while carrying the weapon, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Officers were called about 2:15 a.m. to the 8200 block of Essen Way for reports of a man holed up in a home with a gun, police said on social media. Residents of the Valley Hi / North Laguna neighborhood reported to police the man jumped through their fences while carrying a weapon, according to archived audio dispatches reviewed by The Sacramento Bee.

Police evacuated homes and called for others to shelter in place as the standoff continued. It was unclear why the man engaged in the standoff as police didn’t release a motive.

The SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called to the scene, police said. Officers used drones to peer through a home and search backyards, according to dispatches.

The man was detained without incident just before noon, said Officer Anthony Gamble, a spokesman for the Police Department, calling it a “peaceful resolution.”
