Suspect in ‘blunt force trauma’ killing near south Sacramento canal was in Yolo custody

Sacramento County sheriff’s investigators have identified a suspect in the death of a man found in a south Sacramento canal earlier this year.

Deputies were called to a waterway along Tokay Avenue on March 23 and found the body of a man later identified as James Robert Czech, 66. The area not far from Florin Road and Florin Perkins Road is dotted by large industrial warehouses, bordering railroad tracks.

“Detectives determined Czech had been murdered, likely from blunt force trauma,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

During their investigation, detectives identified a man already in custody who may have been connected to the killing.

Ryan Tatara, 36, was being held in Yolo County Jail in connection with a robbery attempt in Woodland in which he allegedly tried to stab an employee, according to the Woodland Daily Democrat.

Sheriff’s officials arrested Tatara on Friday in connection with the Tokay incident, and he remains in Yolo custody. Tatara faces one count of murder and was expected to be arraigned Thursday in Sacramento Superior Court.
