Toddler dies after accidentally shooting self in Walmart parking lot, Georgia cops say

A 2-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the parking lot of a South Georgia Walmart, police said.

It happened July 3 outside the supercenter in Douglas, according to the city’s police department.

Officers were called at about 2:40 p.m. about a child who shot himself, police said in a news release. Paramedics treated the child at the scene before he was taken to Coffee Regional Medical Center.

The toddler was in a car while his parents shopped at a fireworks stand a few feet away, WALB reported, citing witnesses. That’s when they heard a loud pop and realized the 2-year-old shot himself in the face.

It’s not clear how he got a hold of a gun.

The child was later transferred to a trauma center in Jacksonville, Florida, where he died, police said in an update on July 6.

Family members identified him as Nakyzi Odums, according to a GoFundMe launched on the family’s behalf.

“Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” police wrote on Facebook. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and their family during this difficult time.”

Authorities didn’t release additional details.

McClatchy News reached out to the Douglas Police Department for more information on July 8 and was awaiting a response.

Douglas is about a 130-mile drive southwest from Savannah.
