Woman killed in fiery vehicle crash on Capital City Freeway, CHP says. An iPhone alerted 911

A motorist was killed Tuesday morning in a fiery vehicle crash on the Capital City Freeway after the woman’s vehicle careered across lanes and overturned, leaving two passengers with major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers were alerted to the crash about 4:10 a.m. on northbound lanes of the freeway near Fulton Avenue, not far from the Interstate 80 merge in Arden Arcade, the CHP said. An alert from an iPhone inside the vehicle informed authorities of the crash, according to the CHP’s dispatch log.

Flames quickly charred through the vehicle as a man and woman fled the car. The driver remained stuck and died at the scene, said Officer Justin Fetterly, a spokesman for the CHP’s North Sacramento office.

For unknown reasons, Fetterly said, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crossed all lanes before the vehicle burst into flames.

The investigation was ongoing, Fetterly said, and the woman’s identity was expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office after relatives are notified of the death.
