Woman shot and killed at south Sacramento assisted-living housing complex, sheriff says

A woman was killed Monday morning in a shooting at an assisted-living housing complex in south Sacramento, authorities said.

A 911 caller reported the shooting about 9:40 a.m. at the Cardosa Village Apartments at 5710 66th Ave., just west of Highway 99 and a few blocks south of Florin Road, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies arrived at the complex and found the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Amar Gandhi, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman. No one else was struck by gunfire.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the woman’s name after her family has been notified.

Gandhi said the woman killed was a resident at the housing complex, and investigators believed the shooting suspect might have been familiar with the complex or was visiting. The Sheriff’s Office on Monday did not any suspect description or other details to release.

The Cardosa Village Apartments is a community for persons with psychiatric disabilities and their children, according to the housing complex’s website. The five-building complex has one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Transitional Living and Community Support, Inc., which operates the complex, offers residents referrals, outreach services, independent living skills training and community support services.

The housing complex is a gated community with signs out front that indicate the complex is monitored 24-hours-a-day by security cameras. Gandhi said he did not have any information about whether the complex’s gate was open when the shooting occurred.
