Yoga then wine? This Sacramento vineyard offers classes to ‘connect with your body’

In true Northern California spirit, a Sacramento County vineyard is offering outdoor yoga classes this summer surrounded by wine grapes.

In collaboration with Scribner Bend Vineyards at 9051 River Road, across the river from Clarksburg, registered yoga teacher Kathryn Luna guides people through cat and cow poses on Sunday mornings near Chardonnay vines.

Yoga on the Bend is designed to “challenge your body and mind,” the vineyard wrote on its site.

Luna, a Bay Area native, said she connected with Scribner Bend earlier this year looking for a space to hold summer yoga sessions to build community and connection.

The vineyard, which has hosted yoga classes in years past, loved the idea.

Classes began July 7 and run through Aug. 25.

“It is so nice to have this outlet,” Luna said Sunday morning following the yoga class, adding that she’s enjoyed building her community away from the commuter screen.

Luna moved to the area nearly two years ago and works in the outdoor industry full time.

She also swings a part-time gig at YogaSix Land Park on Freeport Boulevard.

What are yoga classes like at Scribner Bend Vineyards in Sacramento?

A total of 10 people were seated on their mats awaiting instruction from Luna on Sunday morning as a couple of stragglers trickled in.

Her calm voice and the trickling sound of the water foundation set the tone of the space.

“The next 60 minutes are for you to connect with your body,” Luna said before asking folks to introduce themselves to someone they didn’t arrive at class with.

For the next hour, people attempted various yoga poses including cat, cow and extended side angle.

However, Scribner Bend Vineyard urges guests to make a personal donation of at least $5.

All proceeds go to Luna, said general manager Laura Mitchell with Scribner Bend Vineyards.

In an interview from the vineyard on Sunday morning, she said Yoga on the Bend produces a steady crowd of people, some of whom have never visited the grounds.

She said some yogis stay for lunch.

Yoga on the Bend is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sundays underneath the vineyard’s event tent.

Be sure to arrive early with your mat and water. Spots are first come first served and a signed waiver is required upon arrival.

Scribner also hosts live music, concerts and annual chili cook-off.
