        You must be a member in the specific guild. Writer's Guild members vote for best screenplay and adaption, SAG members vote for best actor/actress, DGA for directors, the general membership votes for best picture.

        Actually, Academy membership is by invitation only from the Board of Governors. Candidates must be sponsored by at least two members of the Academy branch they wish to join (15 branches total : actors, directors, writers, etc.), then endorsed by that branch's executive committe, and only then submitted to the Board for consideration.

        The various guilds Bob mentions have nothing to do with the Academy, although there is plenty of membership overlap between the DGA and the Academy directors' branch, the WGA and the Academy writers' branch, etc. Bob is correct in that most Academy nominations are made by members of the individual branches (only writers nominate writers, only costume designers nominate costume designers, only directors nominate directors), but the Best Picture nominees and the winners in ALL categories are voted on by the entire Academy membership.

      The Oscars is a boring award ceremony. Even the the stars who attend look bored and stuffy. The few times I've watched it over the years, I've always bben struck by the lack of creative entertainment. Going to a middle school play would be be far more interesting and entertaining.
