Newt Gingrich Paid 31 Percent Tax Rate in 2010

Newt Gingrich said today that he paid a 31 percent tax rate in 2010 and plans to release his tax returns for 2010 Thursday, followed by the 2011 documents.

"We can confirm that I paid a 31 percent rate, and although let me be clear, the 21st century Contract With America has an optional 15 percent for every American," Gingrich said at a press availability in South Carolina. "My goal is not to raise Mitt Romney's taxes. It's to let everybody pay Mitt Romney's rate. And so I'm not going to criticize Mitt Romney. I'm going to say, shouldn't we all have the option of a flat tax at the same rate he was paying."

Gingrich's taxes were in line with the total effective federal tax rate, which was 31.2 percent in 2010 for top 1 percent of taxpayers.

The former House speaker said his campaign went through his documents three times to make sure he paid a 31 percent rate, but said he would need to check whether that was only federal or both federal and state taxes.

"We're pulling together the documents," he added. "We hope to get it out sometime tomorrow. … And we'll release 2011 as soon as we put it together."

When asked what he earned, Gingrich said he did not know.

The former congressman divulged his tax returns after chief rival Mitt Romney revealed Tuesday that his effective tax rate is "closer to 15 percent."

Romney is under fire by his rivals - and has even been urged by his surrogates such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie - to release his tax returns. The former Massachusetts governor said in Monday night's debate that he will do so in April.

Gingrich, who has gained some momentum after the Fox News-Wall Street Journal debate, also said today that it would be helpful if Rick Santorum and Rick Perry dropped out of the race.

Gingrich has suggested that voting for either would only boost Romney because neither of them can win.

Santorum has dismissed those claims, pointing to his No. 2 finish in the Iowa caucuses, where he lost to Romney by eight votes, and his tie with Gingrich in the New Hampshire primary.

ABC News' Huma Khan contributed to this report.

The only thing this means is that he did not realize any long term gains in 2010. Which is smart... since the stock market and commodities (in general) were roaring back at that time.

It will not surprise me if those gains are realized on his 2011 or 2012 tax returns.

And their tax returns support what we've always thought: they're all wealthier than us!
      • sam 4 mths ago
Ok, their wealthier then you .... and? Since when is being successful a bad thing. You work hard you make more $ work less make less $ it's call capitalism well come to American.

Who are you talking about? Obama, Pelosi. Reid, Clinton? None who pay 31% of what they can't hide.

It is a simple matter of what you define as taxable income. There are many ways to categorize your money. What he needed to provide is the amount actually paid divided by his total increase in wealth. That is a number you will never see.
    • Rick  •  4 mths ago
crap. I am single, no dependents, no mortgage and between federal, fica and state income taxes my combined rate is 43.3% on less than $100K taxable income....!!!!!! Maybe they can share their secrets.....???
      • Phillips 4 mths ago
Rick, do you know the German tax rate is 40%. That includes a retirment pension and you health care. What % did you pay after you paid for your health care, 401k, and retirment?
      • The 4 mths ago
Your a #$%$ if you really do pay that amount. Get a tax lawyer, dude.

    • Ron G  •  San Francisco, California  •  4 mths ago
Just for the sake of truth in reporting - his tax rate is his tax paid divided by his "taxable" income, not his "total" income. The rich people get a lot of money (income) that the rich people in Congress have decided to not call "taxable" income. Like all the other rich people, I am sure Newt moves the bulk of his income into that category before he files his tax returns. The honest figure would be tax paid as a percent of total income (which is how it goes for the working class). If Newt were to release that number, that tax rate would be far lower than 31%. And, it is not just Newt. Romney's claim that he paid 15% would also drop substantially if all his income was counted.

Please tell me what is deductable after you cross at AMT line? Aftet you make $95K in America, there are no allowable decudtions.
      • Michael 4 mths ago
And also explain why my losses on investments are limited to 3K while companies have unlimited deductions for losses. If companies are people than people are companies right?
      • Robert 4 mths ago
That is how the rich keep getting richer and exactly what needs to change.
    • Maddux  •  4 mths ago
Mitt Romney and Warren Buffet pay 15% because they make most of their money through investmets, which are taxed at a lower rate. In a previous debate, I remember Newt saying that he would lower capital gains to 0%. Now he's attacking Romney for paying too little. Newt really is the epitome of a politician.
    • David  •  Los Angeles, California  •  4 mths ago
I am more interested in you releasing your tax returns prior to 2011 BEFORE you knew you would seek the presidency. Smoke and mirrors America.
    • Mister Final  •  4 mths ago
Let's watch the wealthiest pay the same FICA rate on their total income, as do the overwhelming majority of US taxpayers ... on 100% of their income, something the wealthy do NOT do. Bet they don't like a flat tax that much, not when push comes to shove.
    • Vince  •  4 mths ago
He paid 31 percent on the capital gains...just like EVERYONE does. Betcha he paid alot less in REAL taxes. What a friggin liar.

When the average middle income American is struggling to buy groceries and Romney casually tries to place a stupid 10,000 dollar bet on TV with Perry, it demonstrates that he is out of touch with the average person and their problems. He also recently stated that the 374,000 dollars he made in speaking fees last year wasnt "much money". This demonstrates a clear lack of understanding of what American life has become for the rest of us. If he can't understand this, how can he be expected to care enough to want to fix it? Here's an answer: like almost every single other politician, he won't.

Taxes pay for things. This is something America once knew back in earlier wartimes like WWI & WWII. a decade ago, The GOP offered us a war without ANY homefront sacrifice (beyond sending kids to war from families no longer fearing the draft, and instead looking for a steady income and any kind of security -- reminds me a little bit of sharecropping after the Civil War, but I digress), AND WE AGREED! Now we reap the consequences and try to blame the rich, Obama, Congress, ANYone but "we the people" who allowed TWO wars to be fought without setting up the necessary sacrifices (in taxes, for example) needed to PAY for them. It's our own fault, folks. Sorry.

Go back and look at scrap metal drives, turning in nylon stockings and old rubber (tires, etc.), and the rationing of sugar, meat and gasoline all in the name of winning the war. Where was that for Iraq and Afghanistan? Why weren't we told that we could indeed go get Saddam and bin Laden IF WE ALL PITCHED IN to PAY FOR IT?! One the armed forces became strictly voluntary, it became easier for those in power (and those pulling their strings) to stoke the flames of war with jingoistic and utterly biased reporting of "news" that swayed popular opinion to invade sovereign countries on flimsy excuses and without sacrificing a single thing! Hell, we were ENCOURAGED to spend after 9/11! Encouraged to bankrupt our nation! Our grandparents & great-grandparents, who sacrificed for national priorities should rise up from their well-deserved rest and slap the taste out of our collective mouths.

Americans want to have their cake and eat it, too. Lower taxes, decreased services and infrastructure, and inflated military spending. Yeah, THAT's gonna work. LOL!
    • SuzannFan  •  4 mths ago
Yes. Let us all pay 15% and bankrupt the treasury.
    • Redwing  •  4 mths ago
He needs to hire Romney's accountant.

What a lying bastage. We all pay that type of rate if you add in state local and sales taxes.
