What if Newt Gingrich wins South Carolina?

"The South Carolina primary has become a referendum on Newt Gingrich," says Walter Shapiro at The New Republic. After two strong debate performances this week, plus endorsements from Rick Perry and Sarah Palin, Gingrich has taken the lead in most polls. The GOP presidential hopeful even seems to have defused his estranged ex-wife's claims that he wanted an "open marriage," by blaming the "despicable" media for fomenting scandal.

New York Times stats guru Nate Silver now gives Newt a 62 percent chance of winning South Carolina, versus 38 percent for former frontrunner Mitt Romney. Amazingly, says Shapiro, "just 10 days after he was left in a dustbin labeled 'Yesterday's Man,'" Gingrich is back on top. "The oft-derided and consistently under-estimated House speaker has now bested Jesus in his sheer number of resurrections." If Newt really does pull out a victory Saturday, how will it affect the 2012 race?

Newt could make a real run at the nomination: "A Gingrich win in South Carolina would be nothing short of remarkable," says Howard Kurtz at The Daily Beast, particularly because the press has repeatedly and "stupidly" dismissed the indomitable Republican. A triumphant Newt would head into Florida's Jan. 31 primary with "a head of steam." Mitt still has the superior war chest and campaign organization. "But the Romney juggernaut is built around the idea of inevitability, and the game could change if that notion is thrown into doubt."

    ["What if Newt wins S.C.?"]

But Mitt would still be the heavy favorite: "Newtmentum" is clearly the big trend, says Jim Geraghty at National Review. But a Gingrich win Saturday would hardly disable Mitt. South Carolina is, after all, "one of the least hospitable early states for Romney; are we really to believe a close second, with about a third of the vote, would be some catastrophic failure?" Plus, after South Carolina comes Florida, Nevada, and Maine — "all territories much friendlier to Romney."

["How much would a S.C. win help Newt?"]

If Newt wins, the media will pounce: A more predictable Romney victory in South Carolina "would effectively shut the GOP race down," says Steve Kornacki at Salon. But if Gingrich triumphs, "all hell would break loose" and the media will have a field day. Romney's strong showings in Iowa and New Hampshire moved the narrative from "'weakest frontrunner ever' to 'unstoppable force who's about to run the table.'" Faced with a Gingrich win Saturday, the media will surely fetishize his appeal and bemoan Romney's problems — setting up "a frantic ten-day campaign in Florida… [portrayed] as a referendum on Romney's viability."

["A Newt win would be a lot of fun"]

A bruising, drawn-out fight would hurt the GOP: "If you are a Republican who hates a mess," says Peggy Noonan at The Wall Street Journal, then "you are beside yourself with anxiety and unhappiness." The fierce Gingrich-Romney battle in South Carolina is distracting from the real issues, "killing the party's chances" to oust Obama. Just this week, the president blocked the Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL oil pipeline project, costing America tens of thousands of jobs. Republicans should have been howling in one voice over this "scandal." Instead, they're butting into each other like cartoonish "Keystone Kops."

it's not like all the "Christians" even cared, they just want to see Newt answer legitimate questions with, "no".
      • Sheri 4 mths ago
Daniel.....Ron Paul doesn't have a chance in hell of winning any nomination......he's too old......he's a nut, and it's not going to happen

Don't let the media choose the President for you...

Can you imagine what it would be like if this headline said "What if Ron Paul wins S.C.?" I mean he did come in second in New Hampshire. Newt bearly placed. I know this will get some thumbs down but if the media spotlighted Ron Paul and how his views are really logical, he is just not a good presenter / speaker. People would rally to the mans side. The polls would show 80% in favor of Paul. He gets NOTHING from the media. They dont bash him for being a kook. They dont ask about his tax returns because people would see he is a modest American and not a multimillionaire. No girlfriends/ affairs have come forth. No flip flop issues. People he is the SINGLE person on the stage that is moral and honest. My goodness what would it be like for a moral and honest man to be President.... we have never seen it in my lifetime. The President is kept in checks and balances by the other two branches, so dont be affraid of Ron Paul "extreme" ideas. He will have to compromise some and when he compromises, we will still have something conservative. HE WOULD BE GREAT. He has proven his experience, he has stood up to the lobbyist and big money. He cannot be bought. RON PAUL 2012.

yea our last president wasn't a good speaker and presenter see what happened to the economy on his watch, how many Americans died becuase of him, and lets include all the Iraqis deaths that are on his hands. As for the single person that was moral and honest the GOP did not like Huntsman, RP is a whackadoodle.
As for a moral and honest man(well as honest as any president) we already have one and he is in the WH right now and from the looks of the GOP will be there for another 4 years.

OK all !! Here is an ideal, let the people vote in each primary and then let the media report the winner. All we here from the media is "What if that" or "What if this" or this poll says this. To me "What if and speculation" is not fact or real news. Media leave out your speculation, spin as it being real factual news. May God please help us....we REALLY need it.

Oh my god people. Every election year when nominations are up democrats and republicans fight eachother to end up on top. McCain and Romney fought last time, Obama and Clinton tore eachother to pieces for the better part of a year and Obama still won over McCain. This is not new. People trying to get nominations always attack eachother to get on top. That is how it works. Why act surprised?

What if Paul wins SC. Will the media actually start paying attention to him?

If Newt wins South Carolina THEN the Citizens of South Carolina are supporting a SERIAL ADULTERER....An Adulter is a LIAR. HE must LIE each and every day to his spouse. Newt did it TWICE. HE IS UNELECTABLE. He is DISGUSTING.
SHAME ON YOU AMERICA FOR CALLING EVIL GOOD AND GOOD EVIL.

The "jobs" to be created by the pipeline will not be to the benefit of the American worker. The materials to be used in construction are not made in the US. The proposed work force is less than 10,000. When will the American public become informed?

WHAT IF, you went to a NFL game and after 4 minutes of play, You were told by the announcer the game is over. Rats 7-Bats 3, its over Rats have TOOO big of a lead. So why have the Media tried to persuade us if Mitt wins its over after 3-4 states?
    • Gerard  •  4 mths ago
There is no weaker, more farcical candidate than the bloviator, serial philanderer Gingrich.
    • Jen  •  4 mths ago
The pipeline might have cost tens of thousands of jobs....but....were they American jobs? That fact still remains fuzzy.
