Who is wrong and who is right? Is there a wrong or right? Those are questions that enter a football fan's mind when they watch the fight going on between the players and owners of the NFL.
I'm using as reference an article posted on NFL.com Wire Reports at the Chicago Bears' website titled "NFL asks federal judge to keep the lockout in place." And that is the latest move in this contentious behavior between the two sides.
To begin with, the owners asked for an extra billion of a $9 billion pie. Usually the owners just get $1 billion, and this year they wanted 2 billion buckaroos. The players said, "Let's see your "book-a-roos," and the owners gave the players a peek, but it wasn't enough. Hence, the players "decertified."
What that means is that they disbanded their union. Since the owners had locked them out, by decertifying, the players then could and did contend the owners were breaking laws by locking them out.
I find it sort of embarrassing that Tom Brady and Drew Brees are filing an antitrust lawsuit that says the owners cannot lock them out. These two guys benefit mightily every year from the fans; they are not thinking of them.
All of which brings me to my "news of the day." The NFL has responded to the antitrust suit by asking a federal judge to keep the lockout in place saying that, as our reference article says, "...there are no legal grounds to stop it (lockout) and accusing the players of trying to manipulate the law."
The person making the announcement for the NFL was lead counsel and executive vice president Jeff Pash.
One thing that Pash said a couple of times over was that both sides should get back to the bargaining table.
When you weigh that the players decertified as soon as they could and then filed an antitrust lawsuit, I feel you must consider that it was premeditated. While legally defending themselves, the owners, as well as Commissioner Goodell, are pushing for a return to the talks.
What are the players angling for? What could Brees and Brady possibly need? Where are the fans in their minds?
