NFL roundup: Browns QB Hoyer out for season

Brian Hoyer's short-lived run as the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback for this season came to an end with coach Rob Chudzinski announcing Friday that Hoyer will miss the remainder of the year with a torn ACL in his right knee suffered during Thursday night's victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Hoyer, who took over the starting job when Brandon Weeden was sidelined with a sprained thumb and led the Browns to their first two victories of the season, was injured on a tackle by Bills rookie linebacker Kiko Alonso at the end of a scramble Thursday night.

Weeden, active for the first time since his Week 2 injury, came in to lead the Browns to a 37-24 victory. He will regain the starting job going forward, with veteran Jason Campbell his primary backup.

Browns defensive end Desmond Bryant was fine a day after being taken to Cleveland Clinic with shortness of breath, according to Chudzinski.

Running back Chris Ogbonnaya has a concussion and will need to pass the league's protocol before returning.

---Buffalo Bills quarterback EJ Manuel avoided a major injury to his right knee when an MRI revealed a sprained lateral collateral ligament. Coach Doug Marrone said Manuel will miss a few weeks, but will not require surgery.

It is not clear who will start the Bills' next game on Oct. 13 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Backup Jeff Tuel, an undrafted rookie from Washington State, completed just eight of 20 passes for 80 yards with an interception in relief of Manuel Thursday.Thad Lewis, who is on the practice squad, is the only other quarterback on the roster.

---The Bills released punter Shawn Powell a day after the Browns' Travis Benjamin set a single-game franchise record with 179 return yards.

---New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is unlikely to play this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, according to multiple reports.

Gronkowski has not played this season because he is recovering from multiple back and forearm surgeries. However, he has practiced on a limited basis for several weeks.

---The New York Giants acquired three-time Pro Bowl linebacker Jon Beason from the Carolina Panthers on Friday.

Beason will replace guard Chris Snee on the active roster. Snee was placed on injured reserve and will likely have season-ending hip surgery.

The Panthers will reportedly receive a late-round draft pick as compensation.

---The Giants ruled out six players for this Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles due to injuries. In addition to Snee, center David Baas is sidelined by a neck injury. Cornerbacks Aaron Ross (back) and Jayron Hosley (hamstring) are out. Defensive tackle Linval Joseph will miss the game with ankle and knee injuries. Tight end Adrien Robinson is out with a foot injury.

---Kansas City Chiefs rookie offensive tackle Eric Fisher will not play Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans because of a concussion.

Fisher, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, was injured in the second quarter of last Sunday's game against the New York Giants.

---Houston Texans inside linebacker Brian Cushing, who sustained a concussion during last Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, is cleared to play.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said Cushing passed the NFL's concussion protocol and will play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

---San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is listed on the team's injury report as probable because of a hamstring injury. The Chargers visit the Oakland Raiders Monday night.

---The Indianapolis Colts announced that running back Ahmad Bradshaw is out at least two weeks. He is considering season-ending neck surgery, though the severity of his injury remains unclear.

Bradshaw has been out since he was injury Sept. 22 at San Francisco.

--The Colts signed safety Larry Asante, who rejoins the Colts after the team waived him at the end of the preseason. He replaces Joe Lefeged, who was released Thursday night.
