NH gets 2nd part of report on effects of expanding Medicaid under health overhaul law
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- A new report says the number of uninsured residents in New Hampshire would drop to about 71,000 by 2020 if the state expands its Medicaid program for the poor and disabled under the federal health overhaul law.
The state Department of Health and Human Services hired a consulting firm to study the pros and cons of expanding Medicaid after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that expansion is optional under the Affordable Care Act. The study's first phase focused on the overall cost to the state from 2014 to 2020. The second phase, released Friday, examined the impact on the uninsured, the economy, health care providers and state agencies.
It found that expanding Medicaid would reduce the number of uninsured to about 71,000, versus 93,000 without expansion.
