In NH, Perry takes on immigration policy criticism

HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry, facing stepped up criticism about his immigration record, has begun trying to counter a perceived weakness by portraying himself as the presidential candidate with the most credibility on the issue.

Perry's Republican rivals for the 2012 nomination have made inroads by highlighting his steadfast support for a policy that gives illegal immigrants in-state tuition at Texas colleges.

The aggressive turn to offense on immigration, both by the candidate and campaign surrogates, stresses Perry's decade of experience as a border-state governor to bolster his credentials on immigration and border security.

No one in the GOP field, Perry said at a town hall meeting Saturday in New Hampshire, "has been any stronger on securing our border."

The criticism has resonated with many Republican voters such as Dave Connors, a 67-year-old small-business owner who told Perry that the tuition policy didn't "make any sense."

Perry said it was a state's rights issue that the overwhelming majority of Texas officials thought would benefit the local economy.

The question, he said, was whether illegal immigrants would be on the "government dole" using state social welfare programs or a subsidized education program that would allow them to become productive members of society.

"In Texas, we made the decision that it was in our best interests as a state, economically and otherwise, to have those young people in our institutions of higher learning and becoming educated as part of our skilled workforce," Perry said. "If you don't want to do that in your state, I absolutely respect that right."

The answer helped ease some of Connors' concerns.

"I'm not anti-Perry, as I was when I came in," said Connors, who had a Perry sticker on his shirt.

The push-back on immigration was evident also at a town hall meeting Friday night in Derry, where former GOP gubernatorial nominee John Stephen said that none of Perry's rivals "has through action, not just words, but action, delivered more and stopped the influx of illegal immigration" than Perry. "We're going to keep talking about that."

In Hampton, Perry went over an immigration record that extends far beyond the tuition issue.

He said he vetoed a Texas bill that would have given illegal immigrants driver's licenses, helped pass a bill requiring voter identification at the polls, spent $400 million on security measures to help secure the state's border with Mexico, and strongly opposed granting amnesty to people who illegally entered the United States.

He also said he may favor sending U.S. troops into Mexico to combat the drug trade.

"It may require our military in Mexico working in concert with them to kill these drug cartels and keep them off of our borders," he said.

Perry likened the situation to Colombia, where the government accepted American military support in battling drug trafficking. Mexico's government, however, has been opposed to foreign forces in its territory.

"I'm a governor. I don't have the pleasure of standing on the stage and criticizing," Perry said. "I have to deal with these issues."

The criticism isn't likely to subside as his opponents try to knock him from his front-runner perch.

A day earlier, Perry's chief rival, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, kept jabbing Perry on an issue that's among the most discussed among conservative voters.

"Governor Perry is desperate to shift attention away from his liberal policies that encourage illegal immigration," Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said.

The host of the Hampton town hall, conservative activist Jennifer Horn, said afterward that Perry's revamped immigration message was much stronger and comprehensive.

"It is extremely important for him to convince Republican primary voters that he's not, so-called 'soft,' on illegal immigration," she said.

When asked if he successfully convinced her of that, Horn didn't answer directly.

"I want to hear more. I want to hear him be consistent in that message," she said.

How in the hell do you justify giving an ILLEGAL person a college tuition when they are not a LEGAL citizen. Is Rick Perry a freakin moron or does he think the rest of us are morons. He should be helping educate Americans not ILLEGAL mexicans. By law to get a college tuition you have to be a LEGAL citizen. God these advocates for illegal immigrants are really #$%$ me off.

Listed below are several of the arguments that have been used by misguided people to try and justify illegal immigration. Next to each is the reason why each of these arguments has no merit.

      1) They are an economic necessity - Not true. The idea that a bunch of desperately poor, uneducated, unskilled, illegal foreigners are an economic necessity is ludicrous. In fact, when you compare cost vs. benefit, it is obvious that they are not only NOT a necessity; they are not even an asset. Rather, they are a liability and a huge one at that.

      2) They do work Americans won’t do - Not true. They do work Americans won’t do for $5 an hour (especially if Americans can collect welfare and unemployment forever). Of course, if you got rid of the illegals, the jobs wouldn’t pay $5 an hour. The people who wanted the work done would have to pay a wage that was attractive enough to get Americans to do the work. And it might even be enough so Americans could support themselves and get off welfare and unemployment!!

      3) They work & contribute to our society - So do I. And if I break the law and commit crimes, I can expect to pay a penalty of some kind. Anything from a small fine to the death penalty. I do NOT get rewarded. This argument makes no sense.

      4) They are just trying to make better lives - Aren’t we all? The difference is that most of us understand that we don’t have a right to acquire by illegal means those things that we find difficult to acquire by legal means. And we certainly don’t have the right to do it in a foreign country. Mexico does not allow foreigners to enter their country illegally and break it’s laws. If you believe differently, go give it a try. Call me collect from the dungeon. Let me know how it went.....

      5) It is impossible to round up and deport the illegals - We don’t have to. All we have to do is remove the incentives that brought them here in the first place. No jobs. No housing. No services. No benefits. Once we remove the incentives that brought them here, they will leave on their own.

      6) It would be too expensive to round them up and deport them - See #5.

      7) Immigration control is racist - This is just another play of the race card by people who have no other cards to play. Immigration control is the world-wide status quo. There is nothing racist about it. Furthermore, the USA welcomes LEGAL immigrants of all races and ethnicities from all over the world who have gone through the legal immigration process. This is not just a bad argument, it is an attempt to create hatred and division.

      8) We are a nation of immigrants - We are a nation that has, historically, allowed and even encouraged legal immigration. And we continue to do so. The issue at hand is illegal immigration, which has nothing to do with legal immigration. This argument is totally irrelevant.

      9) They are people. We must treat them humanely - Yes & yes. But lets not pretend like they are victims who were dragged here kicking and screaming against their will. Nothing could be further from the truth. They came of their own free will and for their own benefit and they broke the law to do it. People should not be rewarded for breaking laws and committing crimes. Sending them home is the right thing to do. There is nothing “draconian” about it.

No other country on Earth allows foreigners to come in illegally, work illegally, steal jobs from it’s citizens, break laws, commit crimes (serious crimes!), evade taxes, etc. etc. etc. And there are no rational reasons why we should either. There are only political reasons, and they aren’t rational.

If the illegals have no benefit by coming, they will either come legally or stay home.
      • pvxmqbwvl 7 mths ago
Excellent! You have hit the nail right on the head! Plus when all benefits are stopped (no more food stamps, school enrollments, hospital/ERtreatments, fines for employers and landlords who house them), illegal aliens will SELF deport. Any politician who avoids this issue either is pandering for hispanic votes at the expense of this country or has some other reason for wanting a cheap labor source and is NOT fit to be president. We already have someone like that in office.
      • Say Whut 7 mths ago
And if Texans felt they provided no benefit, they would not allow them access to jobs, housing, education and healthcare.
    • Dave  •  7 mths ago
Perry would give all the jobs to Mexicans like he has in Texas!!!

I'm not a Republican and I'm not Democrat. I'm not blaming one person for what is going on in this country, I'm blaming the whole establishment. Presidents, past and present, and our Congressmen who are elected to do what is best for the people and their country. They are screwing over the American people and they no longer have the best interest for this country and or the American citizen. Why do you think that they will not enforce immigration laws even though the majority of the people would rather see our immigration laws enforced. Immigration is bought and paid for, just like the rest of this government. Thomas Jefferson wrote in the 2nd amendment partially for the citizens could rise up against the government if they felt that the government no longer represented them or was becoming tyrannical. We are now living in a soft tyranny. Soon we will not have any type freedoms or rights. We need a million man march of all colors that make up the American people and we come exercising our 2nd Amendment rights. Not to be violent, not to revolt, but just to remind them that the American citizens have the absolute right to abolish our current form of government and to disbanded the party systems when they no longer have the best interests of the people and or country. Congress, the President, the Federal Reserve, the E.PA., Both Party Systems, need take a look at what they are doing to this great country and get their #$%$ together. Think about this everyday most of us are breaking laws that we were unaware of because we have been losing our rights and freedoms. " Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient Causes;and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed." The Declaration of Independence. Please Re-Post.

If you "are not a republican or democrat" then you are standing in the middle of the road waiting for a bus to run over you! Reach down between your legs, grab what may be there and take a stand! We "rise up" on election day and begin to take our country back!

immigration is not the same as illegals. why do they keep saying that? how many years have americans gone through this. obey the law. our government isnt even beying the law. we keep having amnesty. every 10 years or so. it is out of control. why cant mexico control this ? they dont care about there poor. they keep incouraging them to come here. which tells me they cant control there own poor. well neither can we. secure our borders they are not secure. all they do is talk. start obeying the law. stop making excuses. do you see other countries doing this no

I know a Mexican who has lived here and paid taxes for 20 years. He is the only legal Mexican out of 27 who works where he does. He is making 30% less than the illegals
because taxes are taken out of his pay. Who thinks this is fair to him as a legal American citizen? Nor is it fair to the Amercan citizens who do not have jobs that are taken by these illegals. Let's face it, our government and big business are selling our country down the river. It is time we do something about our crooked government. The free trade agreements have made big business richer and everyone else poorer. Now our federal government is working against the state goverments who want to check IDs and send illegals back to Mexico. We need to stop buying products not made in America and send illegals back to whatever country they came from.

Perry...you are pandring to lawbreaker illegal aliens...#$%$ is wrong inside your head ???
    • Pauley  •  7 mths ago
Perry states that educating illegals will prevent them from being a drag on the system.would they(illegals) be less of a drag if we deported them and cheper too. what part of illegal is so hard to UNDERSTAND undocumented immigrantion is like calling bank robbery a undocumented withdraw or a drug dealer a undocumented pharmacy sales rep. illegal activity should not be rewarded no matter the activity

Texans will tell you that this used car salesman in a Stetson changes his "sale pitch" to fit the customer currently in front of him. The problem is he frequently forgets what "sales pitch" he gave to which customer - a big problem with cameras recording his every word.

The illegal invasion of the USA is criminal. Any American especially an elected official that is not demanding our borders be secure and illegal trespassers deported should be brought up on charges of treason.
