Thompson, who scored a shorthanded goal in the second period, beat Montreal goalie Carey Price with 23.1 seconds remaining in the extra period. Canadiens center Daniel Briere tied it 1-1 with his ninth goal 7:25 into the third period. - - Avalanche 7, Sabres 1 Jamie McGinn and Gabriel Landeskog both scored twice to help the Colorado Avalanche to a 7-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Center Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists and right winger Marc-Andre Cliche scored his first NHL goal. Goaltender Semyon Varlamov made 27 saves and also had an assist for the Avalanche. - - Flyers 2, Kings 0 Winger Wayne Simmonds and center Claude Giroux scored goals and goaltender Steve Mason stopped 35 shots as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-0. The shutout was Mason's third of the season and his second in the last three games. Los Angeles lost for the eighth time in nine games and were shut out for the third time in five games as the Kings struggle to stay in third place in the Pacific Division. - - Bruins 4, Oilers 0 Backup goaltender Chad Johnson coasted to his second career shutout as the Boston Bruins beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-0. Johnson improved to 10-3 this season. He has played just 26 games in the NHL and stopped a breakaway by right wing Ales Hemsky on the first shot of the game before he went on to make 21 saves and record his fourth successive win. The victory was the Bruins' fifth in their last six games and their 12th successive win over Edmonton, who have not beaten the Bruins since Oct. 17, 2000. - - Blue Jackets 4, Panthers 1 Center Ryan Johansen and rookie left winger Boone Jenner each had a goal and an assist as the Columbus Blue Jackets recorded a 4-1 win over the Florida Panthers. Nick Foligno and Mark Letestu also scored for the Blue Jackets, while Nathan Horton had two assists. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky had 36 saves. - - Maple Leafs 6, Senators 3 Phil Kessel scored a hat-trick and added an assist as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Ottawa Senators 6-3. Kessel scored his third goal of the game and his 30th of the season at 14:02 of the third period to give Toronto the lead. Center Tyler Bozak picked up the assist. It was the sixth win in a row at home for the Maple Leafs. - - Sharks 2, Blackhawks 1 (shootout) Forwards Joe Pavelski, Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton all converted in the shootout as the San Jose Sharks beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1. Goaltender Antti Niemi stopped winger Patrick Sharp after allowing a shootout goal to center Jonathan Toews as San Jose snapped a three-game losing streak while beating Chicago for the second straight time in a shootout. The Sharks outshot the Blackhawks 36-29 through regulation and produced three of the four shots in overtime. - - Coyotes 3, Penguins 1 Phoenix defenseman Zbynek Michalek scored his first goal in two seasons and center Mike Ribeiro scored his 200th career goal to lead the Coyotes to a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Michalek gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead at 10:50 of the second period with his first goal since March 5, 2012, a span of 83 games, when he was in the second of two seasons with the Penguins. That goal came against Phoenix. Eastern Conference leader Pittsburgh (38-15-2) lost for the first time in 10 games against the Pacific Division this season. The Coyotes (26-19-10) won for the third time in five games. - - Blues 4, Predators 3 Right wing Vladimir Tarasenko scored in the fourth round of the shootout to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators. Goalie Brian Elliott stopped a shot by defenseman Mattias Ekholm after Tarasenko's goal to raise the Blues' record in shootouts this season to 6-2. Nashville has won only one of eight games decided in a shootout. - - Stars 2, Ducks 0 The Dallas Stars put a dent in the Anaheim Ducks' dominating season at home, winning 2-0 at the Honda Center. The Ducks lead the NHL with 85 points (40-12-5), thanks in good measure to a 20-3-2 record at home. But all three of those losses have come in their past five games at home. The Stars were an unlikely visitor to steal two points in Anaheim. They had gone winless in their previous five road games and 1-5-2 in their previous eight. - - Flames 4, Wild 3 (overtime) The Calgary Flames blew a two-goal third-period lead but center Mikael Backlund scored in overtime to give them a 4-3 overtime victory over the Minnesota Wild. Calgary cobbled together a perfect five-game homestead, its longest winning streak since March 2012, thanks to Backlund's second tally of the game halfway through the extra period. Flames left winger TJ Galiardi snapped a 37-game scoring slump to open the scoring. (Compiled by Ben Everill)
