(Adds late games) Nov 2 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Saturday's National Hockey League games: - - Canucks 4, Maple Leafs 0 Roberto Luongo, a favorite to start in net for Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics, stopped 21 shots for his second shutout of the season to backstop the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-0 win over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs. Daniel Sedin, Zack Kassian, Chris Higgins and Dan Hamhuis each had a goal for the Canucks. The Canucks registered the game's first 11 shots before the Leafs finally got a puck to Luongo. Vancouver finished with a 47-21 shot advantage. - - Blackhawks 5, Jets 1 The Chicago Blackhawks scored three in under five minutes to start the second period then cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. With the score tied 1-1, the Blackhawks got goals from Brandon Bollig, Patrick Sharp and Nick Leddy to chase goalie Ondrej Pavelec from the Jets' net. Winnipeg defenseman Tobias Enstrom and Chicago blueliner Niklas Hjalmarsson traded goals in the first period, while winger Ben Smith added a third-period goal for the defending Stanley Cup champions. The victory was the third straight for the Blackhawks while the Jets (5-8-2) are on a three-game losing streak. - - Capitals 3, Panthers 2 (SO) Nicklas Backstrom scored in regulation and had the shootout winner as the Washington Capitals beat Florida 3-2 to send the Panthers to a fifth straight defeat. With Alex Ovechkin sidelined for a second straight game with an upper-body injury, the Washington Capitals also got a goal from John Carlson. Thomas Fleischmann scored a third period power-play goal to send the contest to overtime while Jesse Winchester also counted for the Panthers. - - Lightning 4, Blues 2 Brett Connolly and Valterri Filppula scored third-period goals as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the St. Louis Blues 4-2. Alex Killorn had a goal and two assists for the Lightning and goalie Ben Bishop finished the game with 28 saves, including a clean third period. Steven Stamkos with this 11th of the season also scored for the Lightning. Alex Pietrangelo and Jaden Schwartz accounted for the Blues scoring. - - Rangers 5, Hurricanes 1 Center Derek Stepan recorded a hat-trick and Carl Hagelin added two goals as the New York Rangers continued their mastery over the Carolina Hurricanes with a 5-1 win at Madison Square Garden. New York has now won nine straight over Carolina dating back to Feb. 22, 2011. During that span, the Rangers have outscored the Hurricanes 36-17. The win was the Rangers' third straight. - - Penguins 3, Blue Jackets 0 The Pittsburgh Penguins cruised to a 3-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets sweeping a pair of weekend games against their Metropolitan division rivals. Deryk Engelland, Chris Kunitz and Jussi Jokinen scored for Pittsburgh, which won its fourth straight game. Pittsburgh goaltender Jeff Zatkoff made 19 saves for his first NHL shutout and victory. The Blue Jackets, who have lost three straight, were shutout for the first time this season. - - Islanders 3, Bruins 1 John Tavares, Andrew MacDonald and Thomas Vanek scored in the second period to lift the New York Islanders to a 3-1 victory over the Boston Bruins. The win was the second in as many days for the Islanders. Dougie Hamilton had the Bruins lone goal. - - Ducks 6, Sabres 3 Corey Perry and Emerson Etem each scored twice to lead the Anaheim Ducks to a 6-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Sami Vatanen and Ryan Getzlaf also scored for Anaheim while Jonas Hiller had 14 saves. The Ducks took control of the game in the second period, with two goals in 34 seconds. Vatanen gave Anaheim a 2-1 lead with 4:42 left in the second and Etem made it 3-1 with 4:08 remaining. Cody Hodgson, Henrik Tallinder and Tyler Myers scored for the Sabres. - - Avalanche 4, Canadiens 1 Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 29 saves, Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and an assist and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-1. Nathan MacKinnon, Ryan O'Reilly and P.A. Parenteau also scored for the Avalanche, who won their sixth straight and improved to 12-1. It's the best start in franchise history. Peter Budaj stopped 27 shots against his former team and Brendan Gallagher scored for Montreal, which has lost two straight. - - Red Wings 5, Oilers 0 Despite playing their second game in as many nights, and third in four nights, the Detroit Red Wings outclassed the well-rested Edmonton Oilers 5-0. Petr Mrazek stopped just 14 shots to earn the shutout while Darren Helm, Tomas Tatar, Jakub Kindl, Joakim Andersson and Todd Bertuzzi each had a goal for the Red Wings. - - Flyers 1, Devils 0 Goaltender Ray Emery stopped 14 shots as the Philadelphia Flyers slipped past the New Jersey Devils 1-0 at the Prudential Center. Less than 24 hours earlier, Emery amassed 29 minutes in penalties for leaving his crease to fight Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby in the Flyers 7-0 drubbing in Philadelphia. Flyers coach Craig Berube went with Emery in the second half of a back-to-back Saturday, and it paid off with his first win of the season. Brayden Schenn scored the game's lone goal in first period. Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur was the tough-luck loser, making 20 saves in defeat. - - Predators 4, Kings 3 David Legwand scored two goals and Carter Hutton made 35 saves as the Nashville Predators defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-3. Legwand banged home a rebound off a shot from the point from Mattias Ekholm at 16:04 of the final period to give the Predators their first win of a seven-game road trip.
