Feb 2 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Sunday's National Hockey League games.
Capitals 6, Red Wings 5 (Overtime)
Held silent for 60 minutes, right winger Alex Ovechkin erupted in overtime, scoring a power-play goal 2:37 into the extra period to give the Washington Capitals a thrilling win over the Detroit Red Wings.
Ovechkin's goal, his league-leading 39th of the season, came with the Capitals on a 4-on-3 power play following a tripping minor on Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith.
On Friday night, Ovechkin earned the Capitals a point when he scored with seven seconds remaining in regulation in a 4-3 overtime loss in Detroit.
The Red Wings wasted a hat trick by right wing Gustav Nyquist in the loss.
Jets 2, Canadiens 1
Winnipeg right winger Michael Frolik scored 1:04 into the third period to send the Jets on to a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday.
Left winger Andrew Ladd stripped the puck from Montreal goalie Carey Price in front of the goal line in the left corner to set up the goal that restored Winnipeg's one-goal lead. Ladd, the Jets' captain, fed the puck out front to Frolik, who scored his 12th goal before Price could scramble back to the net.
Goalie Al Montoya made 30 saves and defenseman Tobias Enstrom scored midway through the second for Winnipeg, which won 4-3 against Vancouver on Friday.
The Jets have won eight of 10 game since Paul Maurice was hired to replace Claude Noel as head coach on Jan. 12.
Right winger Brian Gionta drew Montreal even at 1-1 late in the second period.
Price stopped 33 shots for the Canadiens, who lost 2-1 to Tampa Bay in overtime Saturday.
Montreal, which was outshot 35-31, is on a 2-5-1 skid. (Editing by Jahmal Corner/Frank Pingue)
