(Adds later game) Oct 2 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights from Wednesday's NHL games - - Red Wings 2, Sabres 1 Mikael Samuelsson and Pavel Datsyuk scored, Jimmy Howard made 19 saves and the Detroit Red Wings held off the Buffalo Sabres in their Eastern Conference debut against one of their Atlantic Division rivals. Red Wings' free agent acquisitions, Daniel Alfredsson and Stephen Weiss also played their first regular-season game with their new team. The Red Wings killed off all seven Buffalo power plays, including a 1:31 two-man disadvantage in the first period and a 51-second 5-on-3 opportunity late in the second period. Zemgus Girgensons scored Buffalo's goal while Sabres goalie Ryan Miller stopped 32 shots. - - Maple Leafs 3, Flyers 1 Dave Bolland scored two goals while Jonathan Bernier made 31 saves to help the Toronto Maple Leafs beat Philadelphia and spoil the Flyers' season opener. Phil Kessel also had a goal for the Leafs, who are off to a 2-0 start. Brayden Schenn scored Philadelphia's goal while Steve Mason stopped 22 shots. It was a disappointing start for the Flyers, who failed to make the playoffs last season for just the second time since 1995. - - Avalanche 6, Ducks 1 Jamie McGinn scored two goals and Semyon Varlamov stopped 35 shots as the Colorado Avalanche opened the Patrick Roy era with a thrashing of the Anaheim Ducks. Ryan O'Reilly and Steve Downie both had a goal and an assist, while Matt Duchene and John Mitchell also scored for Colorado. Jakob Silfverberg scored for the Ducks with 6.4 seconds to play to end Varmlamov's shutout bid. Roy took over as head coach and vice president of hockey operations after the Avalanche missed the playoffs last season for the fourth time in five seasons. The Ducks endured a rough start to Teemu Selanne's 22nd, and final, season. Selanne is to retire at the end of the season. (Editing by Jahmal Corner)
