NHL Roundup: Senators' Ryan left off U.S. Olympic team
Ottawa Senators fans are likely surprised that forward Bobby Ryan has become perhaps the most glaring omission of the U.S. men's hockey team for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Ryan was hoping to be on his second Olympic squad, having played in the 2010 Games.
The 25-man roster was finalized and announced Wednesday after the NHL's Winter Classic game in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The team's three goalies will be Jonathan Quick, Ryan Miller and Jimmy Howard.
Forwards will be David Backes, Dustin Brown, Ryan Callahan, Patrick Kane, Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel, T.J. Oshie, Max Pacioretty, Zach Parise, Joe Pavelski, Paul Stastny, Derek Stepan, James van Riemsdyk and Blake Wheeler.
Defensemen will be John Carlson, Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler, Paul Martin, Ryan McDonagh, Brooks Orpik, Kevin Shattenkirk and Ryan Suter.
---The Carolina Hurricanes traded Tim Gleason to the Toronto Maple Leafs for defensemen John-Michael Liles and Dennis Robertson.
The deal was completed during the Winter Classic game between the Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Gleason, 30, spent the past eight years with the Hurricanes but played in only 17 games with Carolina this season. He has no goals and one assist in the second year of a four-year, $16 million deal.
A member of the U.S. team that won a silver medal at the 2010 Olympics, Gleason has a no-trade clause in his contract and had to approve the deal.
Liles, 33, was a healthy scratch for the Winter Classic game. He played in just six games for Toronto this season but was a productive NHL player in the past, scoring 46 points for the Colorado Rockies in 76 games during the 2010-11 season.
Both Gleason and Liles were mentioned in trade rumors for several weeks.
Robertson was a sixth-round pick by the Maple Leafs in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
---The Columbus Blue Jackets placed left winger Matt Calvert on injured reserve with an upper-body injury and recalled forward Jonathan Marchessault from Springfield of the American Hockey League.
The 24-year-old Calvert has four goals and eight points in 17 games this season. He missed 19 games earlier this season with an abdominal injury.
Marchessault played in two games for the Blue Jackets last season in his only NHL action. He leads Springfield this season in goals with 12 and points with 26.
