    Nicaraguan journalist flees to US after threat

    MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) — A Nicaraguan newspaper said Saturday that one of its reporters has fled to the United States following what she described as threats from supporters of the ruling Sandinista party.

    The director of the El Nuevo Diario newspaper, Francisco Chamorro, said the newspaper had complained to international press freedom groups about the threats against reporter Silvia Gonzalez.

    Gonzalez said she had received telephone threats, and Chamorro said someone also threw a severed chicken head onto Gonzalez's patio, with her name on it.

    National Police spokesman Fernando Borge told Channel 12 television Saturday that the case "had been investigated and she was given police protection."

    But Gonzalez said in a call from Miami, Florida, where she fled last week, that she is afraid to return to Nicaragua.

    "I am afraid that they will kill me ... and that is why I left," Gonzalez said.

    She said the threats began after she wrote stories about the death of Jose Gabriel Garmendia, a former Contra rebel who fought Nicaragua's government in the 1980s and launched another uprising against President Daniel Ortega because of Ortega's plans to seek re-election.

    Garmendia was killed Feb. 12 by the Nicaraguan army, which described him as a common criminal.

    Ortega's candidacy in the Nov. 5 election has proved controversial, after a Supreme Court commission overturned a ban on consecutive re-election in a widely questioned ruling.

    Ortega headed Nicaragua's Sandanista government from 1979 to 1985, returned to the presidency in 2006, and leads in polls in the November elections.

    Gonzalez identified the people who made the threats as Sandinista sympathizers, and said the harassment may have also been sparked by her criticism of purported corruption in the Sandinista city administration of her hometown of Jinotega, in northern Nicaragua.

Hay una playa donde se come todo que se le acerca donde pueden aventar los cuerpos creo que queda en Masaya. The Dulles brothers, CIA, 1953. They use the CIA to steal natural resources for US and their allies, while they kill hundreds of thousands of innocent mostly indigenous people. They commit terrorist acts of ethnic cleansing, rape, torture, kidnapping, drug and gun running.       Did we read the same article, Xliberalfool? Nowhere did I see that Ms. Gonzalez sought asylum in the U.S. A betting person would say she has a tourist visa. The journalism community around the world will help support the plight of Ms. Gonzalez because most of them understand and respect the problems she is experiencing.
      You need to try living in a country that does not permit all the freedoms we often take for granted, including that of a free press, and you will then understand just how open and accessible the press is in the U.S. People envy and covet the freedoms we have because most in the world do not have them and probably never will. Suppressing the media means control for those who want power or are already in power. Keeping people ignorant is control and power. Open your mind to all that is going on around the world and understand just how isolated many people are. Social media via cell phone and computer has shed light on freedom in many parts of the world where before, they were told nothing because others were able to control the media. Kudos to Ms. Gonzalez. I hope she has a safe journey and is able to spread her message world wide.

      It seems that ignorance and bigotry is still alive and well in the USA. Just think of this next time you go to any given restaurant, drive down any given road and see a construction site, or sleep in a fancy Hotel room. The common factor in all these industries is that they are done my a large percentage by Latinos, Hispanics, or ignorantly called Mexicans "Cause every Latino comes from Mexico right", and the sad thing is that even though they don't make much money doing it, they are glad just to have a job. And by the way not every Latino is an illegal immigrant, some have been here way before the Puritans came over. Just some food for thought. But keep up the good work guys, IGNORANCE is BLISS.
