    Nice Guys Finish Second, Women Finish Last

    Nice guys don't get ahead in salary negotiations, but they don't finish last either, a new study finds. That position is left for women, whether or not they're nice.

    Men with disagreeable personalities outearn men with agreeable personalities by about 18 percent, according to research to be published this fall in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Disagreeable women, on the other hand, earn only about 5 percent more than their sweet and gentle counterparts.

    That may be because people judge no-nonsense women more harshly than no-nonsense men, said study researcher Timothy Judge of the University of Notre Dames' Mendoza College of Business. The new research also found that disagreeable women were less likely to be recommended for a promotion than disagreeable men.

    "Women who appear to be tough or disagreeable get a special kind of scorn directed toward them," Judge told LiveScience. "That sort of neutralizes the benefit that they might otherwise receive" from their toughness.

    Nice guys finish second

    Agreeableness is as what it sounds like: a tendency toward warmth, kindness and cooperation. It's also one of the basic personality traits discovered by psychologists to have a strong genetic basis. About half of the variation between people's agreeableness is controlled by genes, Judge said.

    Warmth and cooperation would seem to be beneficial traits in the workplace, Judge said, but earlier studies had found that, on the contrary, agreeableness is not associated with career success. The question, Judge said, is how the "nice guys finish last" equation changes when you include women in the mix, too.

    He and his colleagues pulled data from three large studies of Americans over time: the National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth, the National Survey of Midlife Development and the Wisconsin Longitudinal Survey. Almost 3,500 people were included in the final analysis, from workers just out of school to employees in their 70s. The researchers controlled for factors such as education and job complexity that could skew the results.

    Across all three studies, people who scored high in disagreeableness earned more than agreeable types. Men who were disagreeable earned 18.31 percent more than agreeable men, a difference that translated to an average of $9,772 a year more for the people in the surveys. Disagreeable women outearned agreeable women by 5.47 percent, an average difference of only $1,828 per year. [Read: Women Intensely Dissatisfied with Pay Gap]

    Toughness catch-22

    To find out why disagreeableness seems beneficial to men in particular, Judge and his colleagues asked 460 undergraduates to read profiles of eight female job promotion candidates or eight male candidates. In either case, half of the job candidates were painted as agreeable, while the other half were disagreeable.

    The study found that disagreeable men were more likely to be recommended for promotion than disagreeable women. Study participants indicated they saw disagreeable men as strong leaders, Judge said, an advantage they didn't find in disagreeable women.

    Though it might seem galling that the jerk in the next cubicle has a greater chance of promotion than you, disagreeable doesn't necessarily mean rude, the authors wrote. Rather, disagreeable people may simply set more aggressive goals and negotiate harder than agreeable types, Judge said. The catch for women is that such toughness doesn't win them as many admirers as it does for men, he said. Judge next plans to research what women can do to escape this trap.

    "Can one become firm and assertive in what one wants but not be seen as aggressive?" Judge said. "Women probably have to attend more to not just what they ask for but how they ask for it."

      So what happened to to all the college girls that can make an assload of money doing porn and stripping making men worship them? Was that included in the survey, I don't think so? Furthermore the majority of low and free rent ads in the news paper are for females.
      That all by itself cancels out any 1 to 3 dollar increase in mens pay, stop f'n pretending.

      BULLSH*$!!! disagreeable MEANS being rude and nasty and mean.. it's not being aggressive..if they want imply aggressive then you use the ACTUAL WORD!! AGRESSIVE!!! not disagreeable.. that is a state where they get their way, only their way.. they are pig headed errogant and selfish. All of the characteristics that SHOULD NOT be in anyone in the office.. ESPECIALLY the bosses.

      The reason is quite obvious. In this tough economy, management wants to designate people as "points" who potentially can execute sometimes very unpopular or painful business decisions. Men are usually considered diagreeable because they are "tough" and are generally disliked but not hated. Disagreeable women are generally typecast as "nasty" and considered unsuitable for point positions.

      If you are disagreeable then you either get fired or promoted. In this article they forgot to tell you about the "getting fired" part! I know more people who got fired by their bosses because they were disagreeable (in the sense mentioned above: "disagreeable people may simply set more aggressive goals and negotiate harder than agreeable types") than those who got promoted. Remember that no boss wants you to get ahead of him/her.

      women are net tax consumers, while men are net tax earners/payers.

      the government is merrily creating "service" jobs that hire mostly women and immigrants who are paid with tax dollars paid by mostly men in the trades, industry and technology.

      with the trade, industry and technology suffering recently with large-scale layoffs, those tax-paid jobs are becoming a larger percentage of the workforce, and the service industry is adversed to hiring men.

      with this shift we are seeing media pandering to the increased money directly in the hands of women and we are seeing a moral decline in media content, which feeds back to a steady moral decline in society in general. for instance, straight men wouldn't tolerate gay parades in the major cities of our country. women justify this with the use of the word tolerance, but in reality is a gag on men's values.

      as women become more of a segment of the wage-earning (tax consuming) we will see a further decline of the family, morality and ethics in all facets of our lives. as any woman who has gone through the front door of a college will tell you, our morals and ethics are paternalistic and repressive to the woman, and that includes her role as a mother.

      so, if you are worried about the emerging nanny state and see it as the end of family values and marriage, look no further than strident women voters over the last 100 years voting for their selfish self-interest, their right to be a narcissist and their right to a working wage without adding value back to society.

      Obviously women come in last. Women get pregnant. Its that simple yet they still can't figure out why they don't move up the corporate ladder. A lot of women start at a new company and time their 3-month propation period with the baby and maternity leave. Understandable of course, but understand you'll never move up the corporate ladder.

        Men become fathers and don't have to choose between having children and having a career. A man who has a heart attack and requires a few months off to recover doesn't experience a serious setback to his corporate placement, and neither should a woman who gives birth. As to child care, it required two people to create said child, and it seems only fair that the care of that child should be split 50/50. Corporations are going to have to evolve from this 1950s mentality whereby men are seen as the "breadwinners" and women deemed to be just working for "pin" money.

        I don't disagree with you but maternity leave more than levels the playing field for families. Again, I do agree with you and men also have FMLA to fall back on during certain events. That's a big price tag for corporate America to pick up.

        It is not easy to balance. My boss hired a woman for a major project - just after probation she went on maternity leave - she knew of her pregnancy before her hiring and kept quiet (understandably)... but still... it is obvious how that created strain.

      It is known that men pay higher rates of insurance. Life/Car etc. Why? The justification is that men die younger. Enter the Canada Pension Plan. Whereby men & women pay in at the same rate. But wait-----men retire at 65 and die at 72 (On average). And women retire at 60 and die at 80 (On average). So men draw the pension 7 yrs and women 20 - 13 years longer on average - that is more than double. Men work their whole lives to pay for the retirement of women. Men get shafted on insurance but when the shoe is on the other foot as it is with pensions, they again get shafted on that as well. Go figure!

      I worked in quite small businesses my whole working life (4 - 40 employees), and had male supervisors or owners to answer to in all but the last company. I had dealings with women from time to time in the scope of my duties, and, in my last job, worked for a husband/wife ownership, where the wife was actively involved in the day-to-day management. That job was very enjoyable in part because she was able to perceive "the spirit of the law" in the way she carried out her duties. What I have noted over the years is that women who do not have good relationships with subordinates, male or female, are those who, for whatever reason, think and act entirely upon a "letter of the law" mentality...that is, they insist that everything be done according to some personal or corporate "statute", with little or no regard for the practical consequences. Typically, though not always, male supervisors, even the "jerks",
      seemed to be able to discern what approach would get the desired results, even if the process did not adhere strictly to "the book". I guess that the pressures or influences from futher up the ladder could also play a part in how both men and women supervisors carry out their duties toward subordinates.

      I don't know where these studies get their fact from. I work for a company that pays by the position, if you do position A you get X dollars, if you do position B you get XX dollars. So anyone else with your same title makes the same as you. I don't believe women are paid less then men for doing the exact same job.
