Nintendo Announces The Next Generation of Mario, Super Mario Brothers U

When the Wii U comes later this year there will be a number of games that utilize the console's unique GamePad controller, including one title starring a character you might be a little familiar with: Super Mario.

Headed for the Wii U, Super Mario Brothers U is a new side-scrolling game featuring Mario and Luigi, Toad, and your own Mii as a character in the game. As the game progresses Mario is transformed into Flying Squirrel Mario, and soars through the air in some levels hanging on to Tiny Balloon Yoshi.

The Wii U GamePad controller offers a unique spin on the multiplayer version of the game, allowing the player holding the GamePad to create platforms to help others navigate through the game and reach difficult areas as well as a access a new Boost mode in the game.

We got a chance to spend a little time with Super Mario Brother’s U at E3 in Los Angeles. When playing with a traditional Wii controller, the game feels much like Mario of the past. The fun in the game comes when using the Wii U GamePad and taking advantage of some of the game's added functionality.

Super Mario Brothers U can also be played exclusively on the Wii U GamePad, allowing you to play the game on the controller while someone else is watching a television program on your TV.

Much like other Wii U titles, Super Mario Brothers U also works along with Miiverse, Nintendo's new social network of sorts which allows you to meet other people who are playing the game, and share comments about gameplay with others within the game.

At its press conference Tuesday morning Nintendo also announced 22 other titles that will be headed to Wii U after its release.
