Nintendo could support Super Mario Maker with DLC for years
Super Mario Maker is an enchanting experience, but Nintendo can ensure it stays as fresh as possible for a long time by updating it with downloadable content.
Yesterday, we talked about some of the elements that we miss in Super Mario Maker that we loved in other games from the series. But that was only a tiny fraction of what Nintendo left out. Today, Reddit user Nintendo625 posted a comprehensive image to the Super Mario Maker forum that shows just how many items, enemies, and course styles the company could still incorporate into its big fall release if it were to choose to release downloadable content (it hasn’t said anything about that yet). But with Nintendo embracing DLC for games like Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros., it seems possible that we could end up getting a lot of this stuff in expansion packs.

That’s a ton of awesome Mario-ness that I’d love to have a go with in Super Mario Maker. And it seems inevitable that we’ll get that chance with at least some of the above.
Nintendo is fully onboard with the producing extra post-release content for its games. Most notably, the company is still making new characters and other items for its Super Smash Bros. game for both Wii U and 3DS, and that multiplayer fighter debuted nearly a year ago.

The company has also told its investors that it wants to do more DLC for its releases.
“By introducing additional download content for blockbuster titles — such as Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, we aim to keep these titles played more actively,” reads Nintendo’s most recent quarterly report.
That strategy worked for Mario Kart 8, which the publisher released 16 new tracks and six new characters for. It could easily work for Super Mario Maker — the company just needs to throw a few darts at the image above to help it decide what to release.
Hell — Nintendo could release a mammoth expansion that includes a ton of Super Mario Bros. 2 elements, like Shy Guys and vegetables, and charge a premium price.
