NJ gov fires a zinger in feud over gay marriage

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The verbal feud over gay marriage in New Jersey got more personal Monday with Gov. Chris Christie firing a slang term at a lawmaker, and a hero of the Civil Rights movement chastising the governor for a separate remark.

Christie called openly gay Assemblyman Reed Gusciora "numb nuts" during a Statehouse news conference — his response to the lawmaker comparing him to former segregationist governors in the South.

The comment culminated more than a week of back and forth over gay marriage, which the Democratic majority in the Legislature is trying to achieve through legislation and Christie, a Republican who opposes same-sex nuptials, wants decided by a public vote.

The issue also brought U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia to Trenton on Monday to take Christie to task for comments linking gay marriage to the civil rights struggle of the 1960s.

Christie last week vowed to veto any gay marriage bill that reaches his desk. He instead called for the question to be put to voters in November.

"I think people would have been happy to have a referendum on civil rights, rather than fighting and dying in the streets in the South," Christie said after an event in Central Jersey.

Black leaders pounced. Newark Mayor Cory Booker said baseball great Jackie Robinson would not have had the opportunity to break the sport's color barrier had the matter been put to a vote, and the mayor himself would not have had the opportunity, years later, to be elected to lead New Jersey's largest city. Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver said many felt the sting of Christie's comment.

Gusciora, who is white, said Christie would have found allies in late Alabama Gov. George Wallace and late Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox, both segregationists.

On Monday, while attempting to clarify what he meant — that civil rights leaders would have preferred having the option of a popular vote to settle the issue, but it wasn't available to them — Christie called out Gusciora for jumping on his civil rights remark and chastised the press for not challenging him on it.

"You have numb nuts like Reed Gusciora comparing me to George Wallace and Lester Maddox. Now, come on guys. At some point you've got to be able to call BS on those kinds of press releases," Christie said.

Christie equated the latest flap to another remark that got him into hot water more than a year ago. Then, in a disagreement with Sen. Loretta Weinberg, he suggested that the press "take a bat" to the Jewish grandmother from Teaneck.

Christie said Monday he hadn't meant either remark literally.

But, Lewis, an icon of the Civil Rights movement who appeared with Oliver and other New Jersey Democrats outside the city's train station, said court and congressional actions were necessary to secure rights for blacks, and that no referendum ever would have been successful.

"I've said over the years that I fought too long and too hard against discrimination based on race and color not to stand up and speak out against discrimination based on sexual orientation," Lewis said.

Asked about Lewis' appearance in the city, Christie said: "Congressman Lewis is an American hero. Any time he wants to come to New Jersey, he will be welcomed with open arms. He led an extraordinary movement at great personal risk and sacrifice to himself."

Christie said he would have cleared his calendar if Lewis had asked to meet with him.

"The governor constantly reverts to name-calling when he is unable to address issues on their merits," Gusciora said in a statement released Monday. "The fact is the governor's opposition to the civil right of marriage equality is comparable to others who opposed other civil rights. If he doesn't like the comparison, then he should change his position on marriage equality and sign the bill into law."

Democrats have resurrected gay marriage as a priority issue for the new legislative session that began this month. The majority party failed two years ago to pass a similar bill, even while an outgoing Democratic governor, Jon Corzine, was willing to sign it. Christie, a Catholic, has not changed his position on gay marriage. He called for the question to be decided by popular vote during the 2009 gubernatorial campaign.

An Assembly panel will consider the bill Thursday. A Senate panel forwarded it in a party-line vote last week, with no Democrats voting against it and no Republicans voting for it. It must clear both houses before being forwarded to Christie.

Nobody should get a "vote" in the equal rights afforded to others. If you are an American citizen you are entitled to every right offered in this great country, regardless of sexual orientation, color, religious beliefs or class status. Period.

You are so RIGHT Doctor!! It all boils down to what your statement says and what it means!!!

Conservatives love the constitution? Not, you cannot legislate discrimination. The point of the constitution was to protect rights, not remove them.

And STILL nobody says why gay marriage would be bad.

Not even in my post yesterday bringing up every excuse that I always see.

Oh, and last I checked, Sodom fell because of arrogance and greed.

Much like what America is falling to.

Don't go blaming the gays for that one.
      • Al Bundy 3 mths ago
It's all the have is to blame the gays. When the gays were in the closet, America sat by and watched adultery continue to run rampantly. Our grandmothers put up with cheating spouses because they didn't have jobs and educations. Our world has evolved and blaming the gays is the latest and greatest way for the straights to look at themselves in the mirror.

Turning a blind eye to all the BAD straight role models that our children are seeing is what they do, they are too busy watching what straight people are going to do.

While you were watching me this is what happened:
Husbands and wives are stealing children and procreating with them (Jaycee Lee Duggard)
Straight people are having 20 children just to land on TLC.
Straight people are using their children to support them (Kate plus 8)
Straight people and their sanctity of marriage are allowing America to choose their life partner (Bachelor and Bachelorette)
Straight people are allowing others to come into their homes and learn how to discipline their children for them (The Nanny and Wife Swap)
Straight people are getting married for very short terms (Kardashian 72 days)
Presidents gettn head in the oval office
        Golf pros committing adultery
Governors have children with their maids

BUT us gays are ruining families and marriage..
      • Adrian 3 mths ago
Lets not forget the millions of homeless and family-less kids.

Who would flat out MURDER for a family.

I guess being straight means you lack a heart or something, I dunno.

        social-control versus truth.
How are hetro-sexual people any different? all human beings born into this same life, they are not better than other gender-orientation sexual-orientation groups.

In a society that is based on the princple of an individual's rights to liberty and the pursuit of happiness, we ought to err on the side of a broad view of those rights, even if it conflicts with our own moral or religious beliefs. One needn't advocate or concede the morality of another's lifestyle to allow him to pursue his own happiness. Moreover, one is, and should be free to make his disapproval known, if desired. But, given the size of the true problems - economic, political, etc. - we Americans face, we should get out of others' bedrooms and force our politicians to do the same.

Churches have the right to decide in their sanctuaries who they will marry and who they will not according to their religious beliefs. But marriage at a city hall or other government places like a justice of the peace, is a CIVIL right - not a religious one - and there MUST be a separation of church and state.
      • Kelly S 3 mths ago
The only people who said there "MUST be a separation of Church and State" were non-elected Judges! The Constitution clearly states that the state shall not seek to ESTABLISH a religion! To establish atheism, no god, as the religion of our nation, violates our Constitution.
      • CORunner 3 mths ago
Kelly, you don't have even a basic understanding of what the Constitution says, and the Founding Fathers themselves said that there must be separation of Church and State, in separate documents. Basing our laws on ONE RELIGION's idea of what is right or wrong would be 'establishing' that religion as the religion of our nation. When no particular religion is used to guide our laws, that doesn't mean it is establishing atheism as the religion - it means government is SECULAR (non-religious), as it should be.
      • VanEthics 3 mths ago
@Kelly- CoRunner made every point that I would have, but beyond agreeing with them you should note that Atheism is not a religion it is the absence of a belief in religion. If the absence of belief in a religion is a religion then bald is a hair color.

I would rather universal-egalitarianism become the meaning of 'american-democracy', and 'american-freedom'.
      -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
George Wallace and Lester Maddox plus other right-wing extremist albeit super-christian -conservative groups have come a long way since natzism and fascism in WWII,and post war times. It is unfair to compare today's politically-correct term, ' ultra-conservative super-christian' political party with the past parties of the same ken. Today's politics are much sharper, use less direct force, and more social-manipulation and social-persuasion and politics, to get what they want.
Play fair.... use a level playing field, be good sports.people have different opinions.
I would rather universal-egalitarianism become the meaning of 'american-democracy', and 'american-freedom'.

    • Ryan  •  3 mths ago
So Chris, you think that people would have wanted to vote on civil rights in the 1960's? Well this isn't a country where it's left to the intolerant majority to decide the rights of a minority. If it had been votes in the South 50 years ago, that white would have outvoted the blacks. hell, they'd have killed or beaten, or otherwise prevented black people from reaching the polls anyway!
    • TL  •  3 mths ago
The reason the right gets into an uproar over this is because they know they are losing this battle. And I think they also suspect they might be wrong. I will tell you all, you are on the wrong side of history, and will be an embarrassment to your grandchildren, who will never understand why you made such a big deal. Bigotry dies with the bigot.

Since when are Civil Rights matters decided by a majority vote ? The reason we vote for representation and support an independent judiciary is because we prefer to live in a republic as opposed to a democracy . The reason we allow due process is because majority rule (democracy) is 'the tyrrany of the majority' .

Our country's founders knew that religious zealots should not make the laws, and that's why they said there had to be a separation between church and state. Those who hate the idea of Sharia Law should recognize that it's happening here, only it's the fanatic Christian Fundamentalists who are making the laws that govern all of us, including those of us who don't believe their religious teachings. This is NO different than Sharia Law, it's just a difference of which religion is dictating to the rest of us. These issues have no business in government: abortion, gay marriage (that doesn't hurt anyone), or contraception. To include these issues in our laws makes us the same as Iran and other repressive countries where the religious rule. Stop it NOW.

ASIDE from the fact that this man is openly infringing on the equal rights of tax paying citizens, isn't New Jersey one of the last states to be giving that #$%$ "sanctity of marriage" lecture? Atlantic City. Need I say more?

MANY people are realizing the negative attitudes against Gays are usually based on BIGOTRY, PREJUDICE, HATE, and/or IGNORANCE, which becomes OVERTLY obvious when the irrational, illogical, ignorant, and/or hypocritical reasons used to deny gay people equal rights are EXPOSED. I am a Christian, and I CHALLENGE anyone AFTER reading my post to give a logical or rational reason why Straights AND Gays in the U.S. should not have Equal Rights (ie.. Gay Marriage , etc). Marriage, Choice, Religion, Procreation, Best for child, Morals, Flaunting, Majority, are addressed below:

MARRIAGE CONCEPT - Throughout the centuries, there have been several God-ordained concepts for marriage, and a man and a woman has not been the ONLY marriage concept. At one time, for Christians Traditional marriage was between Brothers and Sisters (ie. Cain and his wife, Abraham and Sara, etc.) For Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and other Religions it was between 2 people Gay or Straight. For Mormons, it was one man and multiple wives. ‘Traditional’ does not mean that something should never change. . . . CHOICE: I believe (as most reputable medical experts, biologists, scientists) that heterosexuality AND homosexuality is NOT a choice, but even if both orientations ARE a choice (like Religion), we allow religious people and heterosexuals Equal Rights so choice is not a rational/logical reason to deny homosexuals Equal Rights. . . . RELIGION - Per the U.S. Constitution, Laws MUST be adopted with a secular and NOT a religious purpose, and we have the freedom of and from religion. Separation of Church and State is applicable and there must not be any endorsement of religion by the government, so one’s religious beliefs shouldn’t prevent consenting adults from straight or gay marriage. . . . PROCREATION - Many heterosexuals and homosexuals have sex and NEVER have children for a variety of reasons (infertility, do not want children, finances, careers, age, not ready to be a parent, etc.), and there are many who are biological and adoptive parents, or parents due to IVF treatments, egg and/or sperm donation, etc. . . . MORALS - Whose morals, and why is their interpretation of what is moral more valid than your interpretation, or vice versa? If you are not impinging on the freedom of others, just because someone's morals are different does not necessarily mean yours are BETTER or WORSE. It means yours are DIFFERENT. Many people think bigotry, divorce, oral sex, and working on Sunday is immoral, but people who participate in these actions are NOT denied Equal Rights. And don’t forget, many gays and straights do some of the SAME things IN and out of bed. . . BEST FOR THE CHILD - Reputable studies consistently show children raised by a gay or lesbian couple are just as well adjusted and successful as those that have a traditional mother and father. Good and bad parents are in ALL groups (gender, race, sex orientations, religion, etc). . . FLAUNTING - If heterosexuals can state their sexual orientation, acknowledge their husband, wife, significant other, family, kiss, touch, wear tight/skimpy clothing, hold hands, bump/grind, all of which is done in public, TV, videos, etc., on a DAILY basis, why can’t homosexuals have that same right? . . . MAJORITY -The majority of people did not want slavery to end, equal rights for women, interracial marriages, etc. If we made laws based only on the majority, many U.S. groups wouldn’t have equal rights. An unjust law is one that a majority compels a minority group to obey but does not make binding on ITSELF; privileged groups seldom give up their privileges voluntarily.

Everyone has a right to their opinion, but their opinion should NOT DENY others Equal Rights and the same respect they would expect from others. A "thumbs down" without giving a logical, rational, legitimate, and justifiable reason to deny Straights AND Gays Civil Equal/Rights (including Gay marriage), shows you have lost the argument.

Apparently the only way the GOP can find to protect marriage is to carry on a 6 year affair behind the back of your second wife, whom you leave after she refuses your request for an open marriage. Now that's protecting the sanctity of marriage.

Those who oppose the legalization of gays being married are idiots. How come these holly rollers don't organize, march, and protest sex before marriage? Or protest divorce? Why such hatred and animosity towards such a small portion of our population compared to the factors that are really destroying "thier" idea of the family. How come they don't introduce legislation making it illegal to have pre-marital sex? Isn't it the same sin? F'n let people be. Either you believe in personal freedom and liberty or you don't. States should never decide who you marry. A church should, but not city hall. (by the way, i do think marriage should be between a man and women, but I believe in a country where that is my choice, and not a choice that is dictated to me.)
    • Adrian  •  3 mths ago
I wish such blatant daydreaming of the private lives of our gay community was illegal.

Makes me wonder if you really are straight if all you do is obsess over what gays do in private.

On one hand, I have to applaud this man for his steadfast views.

On the other, gay marriage is a right already granted to us by this very country. Much like they should have been for African Americans of old.

The problem is, we think we have the "right" to challenge these "rights" already given to us.

Yet we challenge it with crap. Nobody is able to explain WHY gay marriage is bad. In any way. Bible or not.
