NJ gov strongly defends lowering flags for Houston

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Gov. Chris Christie has strongly defended his decision to have flags flown at half-staff Saturday for Whitney Houston despite receiving emails and other messages disparaging the singer and criticizing him.

The Republican governor said Wednesday that he rejects complaints that Houston "forfeited the good things that she did" because of her struggles with substance abuse.

"What I would say to everybody is there but for the grace of God go I," he said.

Christie ordered flags flown at half-staff at state government buildings Saturday, the day funeral services are held for Houston at the Newark church she sang at as a child.

Twitter was abuzz Wednesday with reaction to the decision by Christie, whose home is in Mendham, a wealthy town where Houston also had lived.

In online postings, there were two main arguments against the honor for the Grammy Award winner who died over the weekend in California at age 48: One was that it should be reserved for members of the military, first responders and elected officials. The other was that it's wrong to honor a drug addict.

Heather Clause, a Richmond, Va.-based blogger who writes about teen moms and was tweeting critical comments, said in a telephone interview that she was appalled by the planned flag-lowering.

"It's just such a bad example for people," said 23-year-old Clause. She said the decision was like saying if someone sings well, drug use doesn't matter and "you can still be an idol."

In upstate New York, Rebecca Eppelmann, a newspaper copy editor, also tweeted her disgust at the Houston honor, then discussed her views.

"It should be for major events," she said. "It's horrible that she passed away. It's not something that should warrant this."

Christie said he was not saying that Houston, who was born in Newark and was raised in nearby East Orange, is a role model. Instead, he said, Houston deserves the honor because of her huge cultural impact and as "a daughter of New Jersey."

"I am disturbed by people who believe that because her ultimate demise — and we don't know what is the cause of her death yet — but because of her history of substance abuse that somehow she's forfeited the good things that she did in her life," said the governor during a briefing in northern New Jersey. "I just reject that on a human level."

The cause of Houston's death at a Beverly Hills hotel has not been determined, and the results of toxicology tests are pending. Investigators found several bottles of prescription medication in the hotel room where she died Saturday, but authorities said they weren't an unusually large number.

The governor noted he has ordered flags flown at half-staff for all 31 fallen New Jersey soldiers and every fallen police officer during his time in office.

He also ordered flags lowered last year for Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.

In Newark, residents were irritated to hear of criticism of the governor's decision to honor Houston, who acknowledged her drug abuse in interviews.

Resident Anna Simpson said she admires Christie for honoring Houston because "if it were Bruce Springsteen or Jon Bon Jovi, nobody would bat an eye."

Simpson was at New Hope Baptist Church Wednesday, where Houston's funeral will be held, to pay her respects on her way home from her airport job.

"She never forgot where she came from," Simpson said. "She was real. We would see her and be like, 'She's one of ours,' and she always made us proud, no matter what happened."

After Houston became famous she continued to make regular trips to the public school she attended in East Orange and to which her family has directed donations be sent in lieu of flowers.

I am in the Army and i have seen the flag at half staff many times. One of the detailsd i was on at Ft. Campbell was color gaurd and we put the flag at half staff one of those days. It is reserved for those who served their country. In all honesty most people in the military who died and had the flag at half staff in their honor would say they dont deserve it. I dont know how the civilian population view the flag at half staff but in the Military it is a truly one of the highest honors. It is bascially saying america salutes you for all you have done for her.
      • Donna 3 mths ago
This civilian respects and honors our flag.and it should be lowered only for true heroes. And, Robert.... Thank you for serving our country!!!!....
      • Robert 3 mths ago
Donna i never know how to reply to the thanks for my service. I see it as im just doing my job. I love my job with a passion and i love being a soldier. I was pretty much raised to be one as my dad was also in the Army as was his dad and so on and so forth. Back to WW1. I will teach my son the important values that makes me proud to be American and if he wants to serve i will be proud of him and if he doesnt i will still be proud of him.

No. Section 7m of the Flag Code authorizes a governor to half-staff the US flag upon the death of a present or former official of the government of the state, or the death of a member of the Armed Forces from that state who dies while serving on active duty."

What were the details of Elvis Presley's funeral?
Answer: Thousands of fans converged on Memphis in the days following Elvis Presley's death, so many that President Carter ordered 300 National Guard troops to the area to maintain order. All city buildings in Memphis immediately lowered their flags to half-staff.
      • Daniel 3 mths ago
Wasn't Elvis Presley in the military?

at least Elvis served in the Army-as great a singer as Whitney was-what was her contribution to society?

The whole flag lowering at half staff was always for war heroes and Presidents when I was growing up. I feel bad for Ms. Houston, but I believe this is a political move by Christie. I don't think being a good singer warrants lower the state flag!
      • Lee 3 mths ago
        I So agree
      • george 3 mths ago
As do I! How about he start lowering the flag EVERYTIME a New Jersey soldier dies. In fact...Has the flag ever been lowered for a fallen hero? I think not.

Gov Christie is completely off base with using our American Flag to honor someone like Whitney Houston. As a Marine veteran and many other veterans you do not misuse the flag for socialistic views. The American Flag stands for a much greater purpose than someone who was an entertainer and died of self abuse. he should be ashamed of himself for even considering it.

By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law. In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff. The flag shall be flown at half-staff thirty days from the death of the President or a former President; ten days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress. My husband served in Iraq and had 16 YEARS of military service, and died (while still on active duty orders) in an accident in the Line of Duty. He was buried with full military rites and didn't have the flag flown at half mast for him. YET because she's "famous" she gets a right that. That upsets me!
    • George  •  St Augustine, Florida  •  3 mths ago
Should be reserved for national heros. Not entertainers.

I'm a combat vet with 6 years service. will they lower the flag for me. NO!
    • Jeff F  •  3 mths ago
I guess I dont get this one. Houston was an entertainer who had some issues, being polite here. That she died so young is a tragedy. That she basically destroyed her life through her addiction is not something that I think we should celebrate as if she were some sort of hero. Sorry, I think half staff is for someone very special who made the supreme sacrifice or who has served the public honorably. I dont think this is the case
    • Robert  •  3 mths ago
just like michael jackson , whitney houston was a great singer but does not deserve flags flown at half mast. before someone out there responds that this sounds like a racist comment,it is simply the fact that she is a celebrity not a public figure and if you research it you will find that most states have guidelines about whom they can fly their flag at half mast for and this is not one of those times.
i don't know if it was this is the governors idea or just pressure he is feeling from some group but he needs to just pay attention to his doing his job of running the state and don't worry about making political points.
    • GailD  •  3 mths ago
They don't lower the flag when our fallen heroes come home from war but lower them for her? What a SLAP IN THE FACE TO THE US MILITARY!!!!!!!!
    • Whatever  •  3 mths ago
I like Whitney Houston, but I'm sorry, this doesn't warrant a nation in mourning.

As for the racists comments, I would say the same for Madonna or J-Lo or Lady Gaga or any other entertainer regardless of race, gender, whatever.

    • Nateo  •  Cincinnati, Ohio  •  3 mths ago
For me how she died does not have any thing to do with it, it's about who she was and what she did. She did not sacrifice for life for her country and does not deserve an honor that is shown for those that have.
    • m.morris80  •  3 mths ago
This doesn't help Christie's image. That wasn't honorable or noble, or even respectful of Houston's memory, that was selfish of him.
    • RandyR  •  Houston, Texas  •  3 mths ago
There went his Christie's chances in 2016. What an idiot. She was not deserving of that honor. She was deserving a memorial from the entertainment industries and her fans. Not the symbol of honor reserved for our fallen heros and patriots.
