On Monday evening, February 13, 2012, the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP) will hold its 18th Annual Dinner, honoring the esteemed and world renowned United States Senator (I-CT) and former Vice Presidential candidate Joe Lieberman.

Senator Joseph I. Lieberman is currently completing his fourth term as Senator from Connecticut and is the Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The Senator’s new book, The Gift of Rest: Rediscovering the Beauty of the Sabbath, dovetails beautifully with efforts of the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP) to promote Shabbat observance through its acclaimed SHABBAT ACROSS AMERICA AND CANADA campaign. NJOP is proud to honor the Senator at this year’s gala.
Additional honorees at the dinner are: renowned surgeon Dr. David Samadi and his wife, Sahar Danielpour, Diane and Rabbi Daniel Cohen of Congregation Agudath Sholom in Stamford, CT (to be presented with the Leslie Nelkin Special Service Award) and Susan Hecht and David Cohen (to be presented with the Carl and Sylvia Freyer Young Leadership Award).
The Samadis, both natives of Iran, fled their homeland after the overthrow of the Shah. In the West, they not only found refuge, but achieved uncommon success. Dr. Samadi is a world-renowned urologist and surgeon, serving as the Vice Chairman, Department of Urology, and Chief of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Since becoming involved with the organization, the Samadis have shown exceptional commitment to NJOP and its programs.
Diane and Rabbi Daniel Cohen are a “power couple” of Congregation Agudath Sholom in Stamford, Connecticut. In addition to his duties as rabbi of Agudath Sholom, Rabbi Cohen also is a National Officer of the Rabbinical Council of America, a Regional Board Member of the ADL, a member of AIPAC’s National Council and serves as the Chairman of the Vaad Hakashrut of Fairfield County. Throughout his years in the rabbinate, Rabbi Cohen has worked closely with NJOP introducing many of NJOP’s innovative programs and establishing a significant outreach presence in all of his congregations.
Graduates of the Lincoln Square Synagogue Beginners Service, Susan Hecht and David Cohen have experienced the good of NJOP programs firsthand. Susan worked for several years in the charitable giving department of the American Technion Society, during which time she volunteered her services to upgrade NJOP’s fund-raising capabilities. Both Susan and David and the entire Hecht family are enthusiastic supporters of NJOP and regularly attend many of NJOP’s educational and social programs.
Finally, Rabbi Yitzchak Rosenbaum, NJOP’s retiring Associate Director will receive a special Farewell Tribute honoring his commitment, dedication to Jewish outreach and the significant contributions he has made to the organization over the years to make it a success.
