NKorea threatens to bolster its nuclear arsenal

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea threatened Wednesday to bolster its nuclear arsenal in response to annual U.S.-South Korean military drills that Pyongyang calls a rehearsal for invasion.

The North's warning came on the second day of computer-simulated war games that the United States and South Korea call Ulchi Freedom Guardian. The allies say the 11-day drills are purely defensive, but North Korea says the training is extremely provocative and undermines recent attempts to promote peace on the Korean peninsula.

Last month, diplomats from the United States and the two Koreas held tentative talks on restarting long-dormant negotiations aimed at ending Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program in exchange for aid and other concessions.

"The U.S. is staging exercises for a war of aggression against its dialogue partner, while putting up a signboard of dialogue," an unidentified North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman said Wednesday.

"It is self-evident that (North Korea) should put spurs to bolstering its nuclear deterrent for self-defense both in quality and quantity to cope with this situation," he said in a statement carried by the North's official Korean Central News Agency.

The statement didn't elaborate on how the North would strengthen its nuclear arsenal. The country has issued similar threats in the past when the United States and South Korea have conducted military drills.

North Korea is believed to have enough plutonium for at least a half-dozen weapons and revealed last November that it has a uranium enrichment facility that could give it another way to make atomic bombs.

Tension on the Korean peninsula spiked last year after the North's alleged torpedoing of a South Korean warship and its deadly bombardment of a South Korean border island. A total of 50 South Koreans died.

The Korean peninsula remains technically in a state of war after the 1950s Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

NK has every right to make more nuclear bombs and increases its nuclear deterrant against US and SK plans to overthrow NK regime by blackmail..without nukes. Main reason why SK n US keep on having military drills is to prepare for unification through invasion under democratic SK terms but only when NK have nomore nukes . The fact that US and SK do not want sign a peace treaty with NK confirms their intentions.

China and north korea must be happy that america and south korea doing military drills.. because china and north korea can observe and spy on and learn american and north korea military equipment and military tactics and after that china and north korea can find american and south korea weaknesses to develop their own military technologies and tactics...
so this is not big deal for smart people, but weak and dumb people get panic and insecurity from this such as north korea..!

Why do we continue to help those who wish to see us all dead? When we get attacked by Russia and China it will be to late.

Wasn't NKorea already at a point where they were exchanging a reduction of the arsenal against an energy deal? Oh wait ... that was when Bush was President and it never got finished when Obama took over.

That is the most asinine article I have ever read. Why would US-South Korean military use a smoke attack during an anti-terror exercise in Seoul if they cannot practice it on the base? Certainly, that will cause South Korean feel frustrated, panic, and confused when they experience one.

They don't really care what the world thinks of them -- they care what the North Korean people think of them. And all that the North Korean people will be allowed to hear is "big mean countries are picking on our glorious perfect nation".

I saw alot of thumb downs to anti-north Korea statements....The democrats must be out in force tonight sticking up for North Korea since that is the model for what they want the US to become. Hey Libtards, just move there and worship at the feet of the short fat loser.

The only wars the US ever lost were against China ... proxy war in Vietnam, and Korean war (after China jumped in).
      • SteveD 9 mths ago
US didn't lose in Korea. The goal was to prevent North Korea from invading the South, and we obviously succeeded. We only failed in the following attempt to unite the peninsula.

The UN police action was a success.

We won Vietnam also! At least the military did, it was the bleeding heart liberals that caused us to pull out and that created a vaccum where the Vietcong were able to fill and slaughter millions of people. If we would have been aloud to fight that war without our hands being tied behind our backs the outcome would have been greatly different.
      • SteveD 9 mths ago
Right on, Dave. You can't fight a war halfway. When will DC realize that?

God forbid S.Korea and the U.S. doubt the sincerity of the North. The dwarf dictator always changes his tune when he needs something. And if the world doesn't grind to a halt and pander to his demands, he flips out and threatens to build more nukes. Can't you just ignore the little cockroach? Better yet, treat him like the child he is and give him a time-out.

Yeah, the North Koreans are right, the US has such a long record of aggression that it is better not to take chances.
    • sonny  •  9 mths ago
All North Korean officials are subhuman forms of life. Anything that pledges more than a stinky fart to Kim Jung Il should be corralled up and shot dead on sight! Half the country is in labor camps and the other half are wearing green rags some might call military uniforms and some how NK can still remain untouchable for all these years! South Korea could destroy the starving million man army of NK within 2 weeks with the help of the Americans but the Chinese would cut off America's credit within days. Its a beautiful world we live in!

Well said....how can you talk peace with your neighbor while flashing your guns at them. These war games is nothing but provocative and should be frozen until there is a peace treaty. Peace treaty should come before disarmament, how can there be peace if there is no foundation to work on. A peace treaty should give both sides reasons to disarm and work toward peace. A peace treaty with the US,SK would give the NK's a pretty good reason to disarm their nukes. Their nukes is their only guarantee to hold back an attack on them by a technological superior SK, US. It's "M.A.D" . The nuke is an equalizer.
