    'No More Weapons!' billboard placed on US border

    CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) — President Felipe Calderon on Thursday unveiled a "No More Weapons!" billboard made with crushed firearms and placed near the U.S. border. He urged the United States to stop the flow of weapons into Mexico.

    The billboard, which is in English and weighs 3 tons, was placed near an international bridge in Ciudad Juarez and can be seen from the United States.

    Calderon said the billboard's letters were made with weapons seized by local, state and federal authorities.

    "Dear friends of the United States, Mexico needs your help to stop this terrible violence that we're suffering," Calderon said in English during the unveiling ceremony.

    "The best way to do this is to stop the flow of automatic weapons into Mexico," he added.

    Before unveiling the billboard, Calderon supervised the destruction of more than 7,500 automatic rifles and handguns at a military base in Ciudad Juarez.

    Calderon said more than 140,000 weapons have been seized since December 2006, when he launched a crackdown against drug traffickers. More than 47,500 people have been killed since then.

    One of the cities most affected by the violence is Ciudad Juarez, where more than 9,000 have died in drug violence since 2008.

    Also Thursday, the country's Attorney General said a federal prosecutor assigned to a northern state has been detained on suspicion of protecting the brutal Zetas drug cartel.

    Attorney General Marisela Morales said federal prosecutor Claudia Gonzalez has been sent to prison. She didn't say when Gonzalez was detained or give any other details.

    Gonzalez was based in the city of Saltillo, capital of the border state of Coahuila.

    The state on the border with Texas has seen a spike of violence as the Zetas and the Sinaloa drug cartel fight for control of drug smuggling routes into the United States.

        The problem with your assessment is that Operation Fast & Furious had nothing to do with our current president or his administration. It began, as far as I can tell anyway, in the Fall of 2009, just months after Obama took office. It appears to have been an operation taken entirely at the initiative of LOCAL ATF officials and not the White House. Holder did not profit from this operation nor did it target political opponents. While it may well indeed have been a badly bungled sting operation, it is hardly a political scandal. There insistance on security now is to protect AMERICAN INTRESTS, if these are not YOUR INTERESTS then leave.

        Wrong Carl, Fast and Furious was Obama and Holders operation. Bush had a similar operation but those guns WERE TRACKED and Mexican authorities were notified about the operation, nobody died, and criminals did not get a bunch of guns. Holders operation let the guns walk, criminals, got them, and people died. Holders and Obamas operation was only to fuel an anti 2nd A agenda which Holder admitted under oath. Bush's was to catch criminals which it did.

      If you don't want weapons crossing into Mexico from the U.S., set up actual customs and security teams along the border. At this moment, you can walk into any border town with a backpack or car full of anything you want without any officials taking notice. The only legitimate checkpoints come about 20 miles or so into Mexico. Just sayin'...that's on ya'll.

      Automatic rifles and handguns? A fully automatic handgun? FFL's may occasionally have one of these if they have the proper license. They are extremely expensive as none have been available to the general public since 1986 or before build date. Fully automatic are sold to foreign governments thru the State department. So go see Hillary if you are going to #$%$ about that. BTW, isn't she looking hot and sexy lately? Hmmmm. I'd tap that.

      The immigration and Reform Act of 1986 was supposed to protect our borders, punish companies that hire illegals and provide amnesty to 3 million illegalss. So what changed.       How are automatic weapons flowing out of the United States??? Automatic weapons were banned in the U.S. in the late 60's. Sounds like you need a new source to blame. Allow your citizens to protect themselves and their families. This is a huge wake up call for the United States, If you take firearms from your citizens then only criminals will have them. Prohibition created criminal empires, the war on drugs has made billionaires out of criminals. Outlaw firearms and they will make billions trafficking them too, and they will be the only ones with weapons and will be able to carry out any crimes they choose. If Mexico gave every household a firearm and the proper training to use them, the violence would be cut down significantly in a very short time.
