How many times a week do you pass a fedora-wearing, American Spirit-smoking, Polaroid-picture taking hipster on the street and think to yourself, “Nobody likes hipsters”?
Well, it turns out that you are right. And now we have the data to prove it.
According to a new poll of 571 voters nationwide by Public Policy Polling, just 16 percent of those polled have a “favorable” view of hipsters. Forty-two percent have an unfavorable opinion of the smelly, insufferable subculture of Brooklynites and San Franciscans.
Unsurprisingly, most of those voters who do like hipsters are Democrats, because they are one with each other. Eighteen percent of Democratic voters have a favorable opinion of hipsters, while just nine percent of Republicans do.
You could have guessed that the age group who most favors hipsters is the 18-29 block — 43 percent of these young folk have a favorable opinion of hipsters.
When asked about their opinion on the unofficial hipster beer — Pabst Blue Ribbon — just 21 percent said that they thought it was a tasty beer. Democrats were most likely to favor PBR.
The most troubling takeaway from these results is that HALF of 18-29 year olds polled consider themselves to be hipsters. We can all thank Lena Dunham and “Girls” for that. This, of course, is not entirely representative of the youth hipster culture, because this poll only surveyed voters.
The best takeaways, however, are these little gems: Forty-six percent of those asked said that they agreed with the interpretation that hipsters “soullessly appropriate cultural tropes from the past for their own ironic amusement.”
Twenty-seven percent of voters said they thought hipsters should be taxed for being so annoying, but 73 percent said they didn’t think so. Let’s all take a moment to applaud whoever came up with that question.
While 42 percent of American voters asked said that they don’t like hipsters, nobody hates hipsters more than The Daily Caller Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson and that’s a fact.
