Norfolk inmate dies after medical emergency
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate at the Norfolk City Jail died early Friday after suffering a medical emergency, the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office says.
The sheriff’s office says deputies were alerted by inmates in the cell block about the emergency and the jail’s medical team responded. The inmate died hours later at a local hospital.
The identity of the inmate is being withheld until next-of-notification, and the official cause of death is being investigating by the medical examiner.
The sheriff’s office says the Norfolk Police Department will handle the death investigation, per state code.
“The safety and security of those in our custody is always our top concern,” the sheriff’s office said.
