    North Carolina Plastic Surgeon Discusses Recent Popularity of Silicone Gel Breast Implants

    At his North Carolina plastic surgery practice, Dr. Richard Cummings has performed more than 7,000 breast augmentation procedures over his 30 year career. He says silicone gel breast implants are the most popular choice of implants amongst his patients. Dr. Cummings discusses reasons for patient preference as well as statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) confirming his observations nationwide.

    According to a recent report by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 318,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2010, increasing by 2% since 2009 and 210% since 1997. Of the significant number of breast augmentation procedures performed in the past year, the ASAPS study shows that 62% of patients chose silicone gel implants while 38% used saline. Dr. Richard Cummings, a plastic surgeon in North Carolina, says he has seen similar popularity at his practice for breast augmentation with silicone gel implants. Dr. Cummings says patient preference for gel is likely a result of the natural look and feel available with silicone gel implants, as more patients are seeking proportionate, subtle results.

    While Dr. Cummings says some people still express concern about the safety of silicone implants, he reassures his patients that the FDA devoted 14 years of extensive research and development to verify their safety. He says the new generation of breast implants is now very different as researchers continue to perfect their design, however they are still manufactured for the utmost patient safety and effective results. Because breast augmentation is currently the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure according to ASAPS statistics, Dr. Cummings says every available effort is being put into ensuring patient safety and quality results through innovative techniques and technology.

    Dr. Cummings says a majority of patients are selecting silicone breast implants because they look and feel more like natural breast tissue. “The silicone gel implants feel more natural and lighter, which is why a number of my patients are returning to upgrade from the saline implants.” Many of Dr. Cummings patients are choosing to upgrade their saline implants to avoid the potential for rippling or deflation, neither of which exist with silicone gel implants.

    Dr. Richard Cummings graduated from Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY and received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He also did his general surgery residency in Miami at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Miami V.A. Hospital, as well as at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. He then completed his plastic surgery residency at Loyola University Medical Center, the Hines V.A. Hospital, and Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
