CHEBOYGAN COUNTY — All lanes of northbound I-75 are open again after a vehicle fire, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced shortly after 3 p.m. on Thursday.

MDOT had previously warned drivers that the right lane of northbound I-75 near exit 322 was closed due to a vehicle fire.

The fire was past exit 322 after Pellston, heading northbound on I-75 in Cheboygan County.

Lt. Derrick Carroll from the Michigan State Police said a man from Lake City was driving up north to go camping, and was towing a camper.

Carroll said flames started coming out from under the hood of the vehicle and the driver pulled over. The driver, along with three passengers and two dogs, all made it out of the car without injury.

The people in the vehicle tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, but they were unsuccessful.

Firefighters from the Inverness Fire Department were able to extinguish the fire and the car was towed off the highway.

The original bulletin was shared shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 6. The right lane was closed for around two hours total.
