Circus animals endure abusive training and living conditions.
Novato, CA (PRWEB) August 05, 2011
Northern California animal welfare agencies agree: The use of animals as circus performers is an outdated—and inhumane—concept. Behind the scenes trainers often use whips, bullhooks, electric prods and other painful tools to force animals to perform tricks. When not performing, animals are kept in small, cramped cages for days at a time with little monitoring. Circuses have long been suspected of training animals through such coercive means as beating and whipping elephants on the head, face, ears and trunk.
"Ringling’s use of bullhooks, prods, and shackles in violation of Federal Law have long been suspected," says Carrie Harrington, Marin Humane Society director of communications. "Laws and regulations offer circus animals minimal protection, and they are rarely enforced."
Several Northern California agencies will be sending representatives to monitor the animals at Ringling Bros. shows. These trained humane investigators will check to ensure that every animal has access to shade and clean drinking water, and will look for any signs of abuse.
"Circuses with performing animals send the wrong message to children," says Harrington. "Wild animals are living beings and are not meant to be exploited for entertainment purposes. Animals do not naturally ride bicycles, walk on their hind legs, balance on balls, or jump through flaming hoops. There are plenty of entertainment options that don’t involve the exploitation of animals, including the Pickle Family Circus and Cirque du Soleil, and they are just as exciting and entertaining, if not more so, than those that do."
