Norway: Polar bear makes unexpected boat visit

OSLO, Norway (AP) — A Norwegian boat crew recently had an unexpected wake-up call when a full-grown polar bear climbed aboard their anchored ship for a 30-minute-long sniff around the deck.

Captain Einar Vallestad said Saturday that the bear had been following the Hydrograf vessel in northern Norway for days before finally venturing onboard. Vallestad says "it did no harm. He was just putting his head into our rubbish container."

The 11-man crew was on assignment for the Norwegian Mapping Authority. A night guard woke up crew members to warn them about the furry visitor.

The crew safely watched from the steering cabin as the bear curiously wandered around the vessel before climbing back into the icy waters.

No one was harmed during last Saturday's incident.

John that's not funny. If you've ever sailed you would know a human only has a few minutes in ice water even with a survival suit which gives you a little more. I made decision years ago to opt for a quicker death if it came to that, and it almost did on a few of my missions since there would be no rescue.

He was looking for that scientist that wrote about his family so he could show him how to swim in ice water!!

The bear probable was hungry. I'm just glad that the crew was able to enjoy a rare chance to see such a beautiful animal up close and safely.

Fascinating. Wonder if he would have introduced himself if the opportunity arose.. They should have tossed him a few scraps.

Bear just wanted a little companionship because his mate has been acting coldly of late!

This is right in line with Dr. Monnett's 2006 paper about the exhausted polar bears swimming for days sometimes being seen circling whales. There are standard formulas used by the people who do air-sea rescue that estimate the limits of swimming endurance.

For all you morons who don't think that any bears have ever been shot at a BP compound...think again. Not only was a polar bear shot, she was shot with a pyrotechnic "bullet" and it consequently too k her 11 days to die! Didn't even have the decency to finish her off humanely. And for Malaka who was wondering about the privileged British schoolchildren being attacked on a school trip - I am surprised you didn't hear about the trip to a remote island in Norway known for bears and when a bear (most of whom are hungry due to reduced ice, fish and seal populations etc.), attacked the nearest food supply (ie: the children), it was shot by a teacher. Bear were here before us but unfortunately won't be here after us unless in zoos,we need to show them more respect. The most dangerous predator on earth after all is man!

Thumbs up Gaynor since I can't give it to you on this s#$@@y website. I hate to hear about those bears attacking kids but they are running out of both area and food resources.

It's funny how we consider all territories as ours and think that the others are intruders.
While in reality, it's us, or the Norwegian maping crews in this case, were the intruders in the polar bear territory.
      But we always get away.
'Cuase polar bear don't read Y!, let alone protesting these kind of 'right-of-way' issues.
