Norway police lower youth camp death toll to 68

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Norwegian police said Monday that the double-counting of bodies in the chaotic aftermath of a shooting spree may have contributed to a dramatic overestimate of the number of people slain, but they offered few other details about the error.

The sharp reduction in the death toll, from 86 to 68, added to a list of police misteps. Officers took 90 minutes to arrive after the first shot was fired at youth gathering for a political party retreat on an island resort. People who called emergency services from the island have reported being told by operators to stay off the lines unless they were calling about an earlier bombing in the capital carried out by the same attacker.

Police also raised the number of dead in Friday's bomb blast in the capital's government quarter to eight, from seven. The total number of people confirmed killed in the twin attacks is now 76, down from 93.

There was no indication that any specific person was erroneously reported to have died.

Police blamed the mix-up on the chaotic situation that erupted on Utoya island when police and rescue workers tried to sort the injured from the dead under mounting pressure to reveal that the number of slain youths was much higher than originally reported.

"It could be that some were counted twice," police spokesman Oystein Maeland told reporters at a news conference in Oslo, explaining that bodies were spread all over the island and some of the dead hidden under other bodies. "But it was necessary to get that information out there (fast) because it was sky-high compared with the number that media had been given."

A 32-year-old Norwegian, Anders Behring Breivik, is a suspect in both the Oslo blast and the camp shooting. He was seized on the island in a lake northwest of Oslo and is in custody.

Police initially set the death toll from the shooting at 10.

But as survivors left the island, people began saying online and to news media that the total number of fatalities was much higher. Early Saturday morning, police released a statement saying some 80 people had likely been killed.

"The situation was almost impossible to assess," Maeland said. "We saw that people that had survived started posting on the Internet how many dead bodies they had seen and it was important for us to go public with this. Afterward we realize it was necessary to make a downgrade."

Still, as rescue workers continue to comb the area and search the waters around the island, the tally of victims could grow, police said.

I wouldn't say love of God ... because no matter which religion you read they never teaches you to kill innocent people....

Let's blame the coward who did this 1st & foremost. He planned & carried out a sick & cowardly act upon unarmed, innocent people and children. Now, let's not make him an infamous famous nutjob that is a center of attention & fame - like The Unabomber.... That guy killed people too, we forget that. His bombs killed people. Yet, his manifesto is widely read, his reasons widely supported by the fringe left & right, to this day. He was a leftist, and yet that part was largely ignored.... He should have been labeled a crazy terrorist murderer, not a highly intelligent, scholarly, leave me alone, take on his perceived wrongs w/a bomb loner....who was just misunderstood. We get guys like this coward in Norway doing things like this from that sort of celebrity and manifesto attention. Do not make this guy into a crazed anti-hero.He's a murderer, nothing else. He was mad at this or that, unhappy with this or that, well wake up psycho, lots of people are unhappy with things, they don't kill and injure 100+ people to make a point that is pointless. He's a coward, who killed children. That's not a right or left thing - his reasons are pointless.... his actions are worthy of the death penalty ,and not a free forum to tell the world of his perceived gripes w/Norway and Islam.

The Unabomber was a smart guy, a genius. this guy is a freemason.

We want to believe that these things happen independent of outside triggers. What if there are triggers for these actions? Rightwing hate speech for example. As in Unabomber, he was genius, and also the victim of MK-Ultra. If there are outside influences that have no boundaries, how to immunize those susceptible?

Racism, prejudice, bigotry. Will we ever be rid of these things? Why can't people just live and let live?

Does 68 dead make this event any less tragic? No it does not! This animal made a decision to kill innocent human beings for nothing! He took away people who had nothing wrong and who were loved by many.

I congratulate Norway...closed hearing, no public access or media, he should not be allowed to use the death of young innocent people as platform to pontificate.

This doesn't change the fact that kids are still dead and that this nut job needs to pay for what he's done.

What I don't understand about all this is that the Muslim population in Norway is only 2 percent of the entire population?!! I don't understand why this guy thought Islam was taking over Norway? Then again, I don't understand crazy!

By now, it should be pretty clear in everyone's minds that different types of Fundamentalists don't get along with each other. And thats not to say, "get rid of funamentals"... Its a matter of being tactful about it. But ironically, often times people who have never read a Bible and/or a Koran seem to think they know how to solve all the issues. THEY DON'T.

ie, Never stick Richard Dawkins (Fundamental Atheist) in a locked room with The Pope and The Ayatollah.

For the most part, the majority of people kinda get along, or they find their own niches, whatever. But sometimes, "Spreading Diversity" isn't always a good thing. You can't expect to put Gazelles in the same cage as lions, and have a zoo you'd want to bring your family to.

Its a fundamentally stupid thing to do, and completely in-sensitive to the actual cultures at hand. Throwing "Right Wing Christians" into the Arab World, and "Right Wing Muslims" into the Western World was probably the Dumbest Idea Ever..

If you haven't read a Bible and/or a Koran, stop telling people they need to get along with each other (When they don't).

I'm not saying what happened was right. But until people understand the mentality of what is actually occuring, this problem is only going to escalate. This incident is a classic case of a "Right Wing Christian" feeling threatened by the import of "Right Wing Muslims". And who was endorsing that import of "Right Wing Muslims"? Thats right... The Political Left in Norway, screaming "Tolerance, Tolerance!", many of whom have never picked up a Bible nor Koran in their lives.

Many of these immigrants were Iraqi WAR refugees. IE, someone with a reason to hold a grudge, whether thats right or wrong. But this "idealistic left" kept pushing for "tolerance". Rapes in Norway skyrocketed (Google Rape Muslim Norway), and it is VERY easy to physically identify your average Norwegian from your average Iraqi (Its not a melting-pot like the US).

But any attempt at bringing this problem to light were attacked with chants of "Racist! Racist! Bigot!" until.....

      Last Friday...

Its a terrible situation, all the way around. But many of the people making the decisions have no understanding whatsoever of either side's religious beliefs, and it disgusts me. Stop expecting peaceful co-existence of Lions and Hyenas and gazelles. Its completely delusional thinking, and is going to cause a planetary-scale "civil-style" war...

Read Darwin, Read The Bible, Read The Koran (in the correct order), and you'll quickly find that there's no "peace" in nature anywhere. If you can't see that, you're living in a fantasy land...

This is one reason why the death penalty should be an option! I don't know if Norway has it or not, but, for this type of crime, he should be put to death as soon as possible.

How can someone speak out against Muslims as terrorist and then commit an act like this? Stooping to someone elses level is not about justice or sending a signal. It's becoming the very thing you speak out against.

norway does not have mass killings or 100,000 homicides like america does. they are not prepared for this kind of tragedy.

His father severed ties with him when he was 16 - why ? Is this the sickness of modern times - growing up without the father ? Because his daddy (a diplomat some sources say) chose another woman to live with and left his teenage son to cope with his problems ? And now he is ashamed ? Oh, please. Where were you old man to teach your son the respect of life and keep him from going crazy ? Fathers not taking responsibility contribute to breeding monsters. Irresponsibilty breeds irresponsibility.

Put him in with the general prison population. Problem will soon be solved.

People who think that a gun in everybody's hands is a solution are so wrong. How many innocent people were carrying guns when Rep.Gilfords was shot? Or recently at a kid b-day party when 5 were killed? Nobody. Murderers like this one know how to place themselves in places where normal people do not carry guns. Having more guns will increase the number of innocent victims. People will start shooting for the most trivial reasons -- if a customer rep is rude, or for not yielding in traffic, kids will get hold of guns etc. We will be like in a war zone.

In Norway a shooting like this occurred in a hundred years. In America, gun-friendly country, we have shootings every single day.

ONLY religion... any religion, can cause otherwise good people to commit acts of unspeakable horror, willingly. There is abundant history making it absolutely clear that the proverbial "root of all evil" is not some childish, imagined "devil", but the indoctrinated minds of "true believers" that divide the human family into the "good", who "faithfully" follow their imagined-god... and all the rest, as being "lost", "evil-doers", "infidels", "heretics"... "satan-worshipers"... and all the other dehumanizing labels that allow religious zealots to practice their bloodsport from time to time.
Those who do not learn from this massively tragic history of human dysfuction (i.e. following religious dogma) are doomed to repeat it. Clearly, the "christian" version of god... jesus, and his side-kick the holy ghost... were MIA (as usual) during the wasting of these young lives. Prayer has never, ever... changed... anything.
