Not even ‘Stranger Things’s’ creators know where to take the show next

Stranger Things is one of the best TV shows Netflix has released since it started making original content for its streaming service. There’s absolutely no doubt about it. It’s enough to see one episode to want more, and thankfully, you can proceed to the next one immediately. This 80s thriller debuted just recently on July 15th, but it became an instant hit with subscribers. A second season has already been confirmed, but a new interview reveals that two of the show's top stars have no idea where season 2 is heading.

Winona Ryder, who plays the distraught mother of a missing boy, and Millie Bobby Brown, the young actress playing a girl with special powers who escapes a government research facility, spoke to Variety about what it was like to prepare for the roles and work with the creators of the series, the Duffer twins.

Matt and Ross Duffer have not told them what’s next for them in season 2.

“I’m dying to know,” Ryder said when asked whether she knows anything about the future season. “When are they gonna say that? It has to be soon.”

“Same,” Brown added. “We’re exactly like you guys, we have no idea. But hopefully…”

On the other hand, a little mystery never hurt anyone, at least not in this case. After all, we hated HBO’s Jon Snow moment and that goes double for AMC’s The Walking Dead cliffhanger from season 6's finale.

But there is some secrecy surrounding Stranger Things as well, and the actors experienced it from the beginning. The interview reveals that both Ryder and Brown signed on without knowing what would happen to their characters. They only had one episode to judge the show by.

“Yeah. But I’m suspect — they had to have written more, right?” Ryder said. “Can you get a show with just one script? I don’t know. A lot of friends of mine are on shows, or have been, and the one thing I remember when I first met with [creators, the Duffer twins] was thinking, “I don’t want to find out some big dark secret that would make me go, ‘I would’ve played it so differently!’”

She continued, “That’s happened to a lot of friends of mine. Like, “I’m the killer?” They’ll find out at a table read. I’ve known so many people who have had that experience. [The Duffers] didn’t tell me everything, but they told me enough. I said, ‘You have to let me know if there’s something that would affect the way I play her.’ They were great in the way they helped me construct a backstory.”

Brown said that it’s hard to trust someone with your character. “They’re two brothers, they’re so young, but I had no idea they’re geniuses. They’re literally geniuses.”

With that in mind, we can’t wait to see what the geniuses will be up to for Stranger Things season 2. To read the entire interview, which reveals more details about how Ryder played her character as well as her complete lack of a social media presence, head on over to Variety.
