Batstone points out that social organizations compete with brands and entertainment for the finite attention, time and investment of the communities they rely on for survival and for bringing about change. As a result, the traditional charity model is no longer enough. Social causes need to adapt.
"The power of social media is when it is built on top real activity," says Batstone. It's not a magic tool.
Not For Sale and launched a joint drive to fund REBBL, a beverage company that uses existing consumer purchases to fight slavery. REBBL will create jobs for former and at-risk slaves in high-trafficked communities and fund additional projects to change the world for the better.
