Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day
We all have one -- hidden or not. You may be a musician, an artist, a star athlete, or maybe your talent is more of an oddity. Discover your unique talent and find a way to express that talent, Career Hub recommends. The holiday was created by Shannon Hurd, the record holder for a football-throwing game at ESPN Zone.
Some Extraordinary Human Talents from Listverse:
* Supertasters have extra fungiform papillae on their tongues that give them a stronger sensation of taste.
* Tetrachromacy sounds like a super power. But it's the "ability to see light from four distinct sources."
* Eidetic memory "is the ability to recall sounds, images, or objects from one's memory with extreme accuracy."
U.S. Marines Leaves Philippines Anniversary
One historic event often overlooked is how long it took the U.S. Marines to leave the island of the Philippines. Military withdrawal is not always quick and easy. During the Spanish-American War, the Philippines became a U.S. colony. On March 24, 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill granting independence to the Philippines. The last U.S. Marines left on Nov. 24, 1992.
National Sardines Day
Tuna may have taken over as the sandwich fish of choice, but at one time sardines held that honor. In 1896 sardines were celebrated in canapes, sandwiches made with thin and delicate toast, according to "Feeding America." The famous Dagwood Sandwich, unveiled in America on April 16, 1936, according to Foodtimeline, contained not only tongue, onion and horseradish -- but also sardines. Try some traditional sardines on crackers or spring salad with tarragon vinaigrette (and yes, sardines).
Toulouse Lautrec Birth Anniversary
If you liked "Moulin Rouge," you'll love Lautrec. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born on Nov. 24, 1864, in Albi, France. A painter and a poster designer, Lautrec "was fascinated by the decadent spirit and glamour of bohemian life in the Parisian district of Montmartre at the turn of the 20th century," according to the National Gallery of Art.
Turkey-Free Thanksgiving
You may be breaking a wishbone and secretly hoping for a drama-free Thanksgiving. The Vegetarian Awareness Network is wishing for something else: a turkey-free Thanksgiving. The idea of not eating turkey on Thanksgiving may see counter-intuitive, but they may not have eaten turkey at the first Thanksgiving. The Wampanoag guests brought five deer (venison), the English brought fowl, (probably migrating waterfowl like ducks and geese), according to NPR.
There are plenty of non-meat main dishes you can serve for Thanksgiving dinner if you want to go "cold turkey" from eating meats. This includes ratatouille, pumpkin ravioli with sage brown butter, or sweet potato shepherd's pie.
